Top MLB Odds, Picks & Betting Predictions for Friday

N.Y. Yankees at Houston Astros

When: Friday, June 30th, 2017 Where: Minute Maid Park, 8:10 PM ET TV: MLBN (out-of-market only) / YES (New York) / ROOTSW (Houston) Radio: WFAN 660 (New York) / KBME 790 (Houston) Stream: MLB.tv MLB Odds: Astros at -150 Pitching Matchup: Michael Pineda (7-4, 4.12 ERA) (NY) vs Lance McCullers Jr. (7-1, 2.53 ERA) (HOU) The Houston Astros (53-26) and the New York Yankees (42-34) tore out to two of the hottest starts in all of MLB this season. The Yankees, though, have faltered as the calendar turned to June — while the Astros have remained red-hot. One reason for the Astros’ continued success has been the stellar pitching of Lance McCullers, Jr. He did have a brief stint on the disabled list, but in his return last weekend against Seattle, he threw five solid innings, just giving up a single run. He has already faced the Yankees once this season, throwing six shutout innings on May 12 up in The Bronx.

Who Will Start for the Yankees?

The Yankees start Michael Pineda, who has that nice 7-4 record but who has gotten shelled in two of his last three starts. In a June 14 loss to the Angels and a June 25 loss to the Rangers, he gave up a combined 16 hits and 12 earned runs in just 10 innings — including four combined home runs. With an offense like Houston’s on tap, I see another long night for Pineda, and a big Astros win.

Washington Nationals at St. Louis Cardinals

When: Friday, June 30th, 2017 Where: Busch Stadium, 8:15 PM ET TV: MLBN (out-of-market only) / MASN 2 (Washington) / FS-M(St. Louis) Radio: 106.7 The Fan (Washington) / KMOX 1120 (St. Louis) Stream: MLB.tv MLB Odds: Cardinals at -115 Pitching Matchup: Tanner Roark (6-5, 5.15 ERA) (WAS) vs Mike Leake (5-6, 3.12 ERA) (STL) The Washington Nationals (47-31) visit the St. Louis Cardinals (36-41) to start their weekend series, and we have a matchup of pitchers who are hovering right around the .500 mark — but Mike Leake’s ERA is more than two runs lower than that of his counterpart, Tanner Roark. Leake has gone more than a month without picking up a win, but that has a lot more to do with a lack of run support than his own pitching. He has made it through the sixth inning in three straight starts, and his team has won his last two starts, although the bullpen has picked up both wins. His last time out, he permitted four runs (three earned) on six hits in six innings.

What’s Up with Tanner Roark?

Tanner Roark has definitely been a weak link for Washington up to this point. In his last three starts, he has combined to last just 13 ⅔ innings, permitting 19 combined earned runs on 24 combined hits, giving up a home run in each outing. The Cardinals don’t have a top-flight offense, but Roark has been getting shelled by the likes of the Braves and the Reds, both lower- tier lineups as well. I see the Cardinals opening this series with a victory. The Mets are MLB odds favorites against the Phillies on Friday.

Philadelphia Phillies at N.Y. Mets

When: Friday, June 30th, 2017 Where: Citi Field, 7:10 PM ET TV: MLB Extra Innings / CSN-P (Philadelphia)  / SNY (NY Mets) Radio: 94 WIP (Philadelphia) / 710 WOR (NY Mets) Stream: MLB.tv MLB Odds: Mets at -235 Pitching Matchup: Ben Lively (1-2, 3.90 ERA) (PHI) vs Jacob deGrom (7-3, 3.71 ERA) (NY) Ben Lively is part of the Phillies’ youth movement, and he started his major league career with four straight quality starts. Lively didn’t fare as well against Arizona on Saturday, but he did hit a two-run homer to help his own cause — the first Phillies rookie pitcher to have such an accomplishment in 22 years. Unfortunately, things don’t get easier for Lively on Saturday night, because he faces a Jacob deGrom who is in a terrific stretch right now. He has gone 3-0 in his last three starts, posting a 0.72 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP over those games. I see deGrom mowing down the Phillies at home.
