The Rockies (11-13) have a number of issues to contend with on their squad, but the one that sticks out like a sore thumb is the ineffectiveness of their starting rotation. Through the first month of the season, the starters only delivered 5 quality starts, which is far and away the lowest in the MLB. Colorado is now looking at a -32 run differential, as their hitters are unable to plug the leaks being thrown their way by the pitching staff. The Rockies have now lost 5 games in a row, during which time they have given up an astonishing 47 runs. There was probably a sense of relief that the first game in this series got postponed, as it might give them an extra day to get over this current case of shell shock. Jordan Lyles (2-2, 4.25 ERA) will get the start on Wednesday. Lyles was actually not having a bad start to the season until he was shelled in his last outing, taking his ERA from 2.92 to 4.25 in just 5 innings of ball.
Things have not been going much better for the Arizona Diamondbacks as of late (10-14), as they are just 3-7 in their last 10, and are just coming off a sweep at the hands of the LA Dodgers. The only real bright spot in that stretch of games was the series win over the Colorado Rockies, where the D’Backs bats were red hot. They have been unable to build on that, though, giving up 15 runs against the Dodgers whilst only getting 4 runs in response. There was even more misery for Arizona when rising star Archie Bradley was hit in the face by a line drive, although he is set to return to the bullpen for this series. Left-hander Robbie Ray will get his first start of the season on Wednesday, and it’s tough to say what we can expect from his season debut.
