Wednesday’s Best MLB Betting Picks & Predictions

As the national pastime observes the Independence Day holiday this weekend, we approach several quality matchups to place some MLB betting picks for Wednesday. The Baltimore Orioles take on the Milwaukee Brewers in interleague play, while the Boston Red Sox continue their series in Texas against the Rangers, and the New York Mets head to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Nationals in an NL East matchup. Take a look at all of our thoughts on these three matchups before you place your MLB betting choices.

Wednesday’s Best MLB Betting Picks & Predictions

Baltimore Orioles at Milwaukee Brewers

When: Wednesday, July 5th. 7:10pm ET Where: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin TV: WTMJ 620 (Baltimore) / FSWI (Milwaukee) Radio: 105.7 The Fan (Baltimore) / WTMJ 620 (Milwaukee) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Chris Tillman (1-5, 7.90 ERA) (BAL) vs Matt Garza (3-4, 4.36 ERA) (MIL) Pay close attention to late updates for this game, because the Orioles may have to use a spot starter. Tillman’s wife is apparently about to give birth to a child, so he may miss the start. Despite those awful numbers, Tillman has been pitching better lately. In his last start, he held the Rays to two runs over five innings, but before that he had permitted 23 runs in 15 innings combined over his last four starts. So it’s hard to imagine the Orioles putting up a long reliever or a call-up into his spot that would deliver a poorer performance.

Who Will Start for Milwaukee?

The Brewers will start Matt Garza on Wednesday. He had a decent outing on Friday as the Brewers beat Miami, holding the Marlins to a pair of runs on six hits in five innings. Pitching at home, his numbers are roughly the same as his year numbers, 2-2, with a 4.71 ERA. Wellington Castillo and Mark Trumbo of the Orioles are the only batters in the lineup with a lot of at-bats against Garza, and they both have taken him deep once in their careers. Even so, I like the Brewers to knock around Tillman and take the home win. If the Orioles use a call-up instead, though, I would probably move to a different game because of the variables that can bring (along with the Brewers’ inconsistent bats).

Boston Red Sox at Texas Rangers

When: Wednesday, July 5th. 8:05pm ET Where: Globe Life Park, Arlington, Texas TV: NESN (Boston) / FSSW (Texas) Radio: WCEC 1490 (Boston) / 105.3 The Fan (Texas) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Doug Fister (0-1, 4.91 ERA) (BOS) vs Andrew Cashner (3-7, 3.87 ERA) (TEX) Andrew Cashner has pitched much better for the Rangers than his record would suggest, as paltry run support has doomed him in several of his outings. He returned from the disabled list on June 29 and permitted five runs over five innings, before getting hit with a broken bat and leaving the game.  He faced Boston back on May 23 and gave up five runs in five frames as well. The real issue for Texas right now is their bullpen — in the teams’ series opener on Monday night, Tony Barnette came in from the bullpen in a tie game in the top of the sixth and threw a wild pitch to let one run score and then grooved a pitch to Dustin Pedroia, giving up a two-run single.

How Did That Matchup End?

The Rangers fought back from that three-run deficit to send the game to extra innings, only to see reliever Ernesto Frieri give up two more runs in the 11th. The offense just can’t keep up with the shoddy work that the bullpen is providing right now. The Sox start Doug Fister, now making his third start after coming over from the Angels off waivers. Away from home, Fister has a lifetime record of 36-40 and a 3.94 ERA. Mike Napoli (.364 lifetime average off Fister, 2 HR, 3 RBI) has hit home runs in three straight games and hits well off Fister, and Elvis Andrus (.375, 3 RBI) hits well off him as well. I see this going to the bullpens…and I see the Red Sox winning late. The Red Sox are MLB betting favorites for Wednesday's game.

N.Y. Mets at Washington Nationals

When: Wednesday, July 5th. 7:08pm ET Where: Nationals Park, Washington, D.C. TV: ESPN (out-of-market only) / SNY (NY) / MASN (Washington) Radio: 710 WOR (NY) / 106.7 The Fan (Washington) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Jacob deGrom (8-3, 3.55 ERA) (NY) vs Tanner Roark (6-6, 5.27 ERA) (WAS) In his last four starts, Mets starter Jacob deGrom has been simply outstanding, going 4-0 with an 0.84 ERA and fanning 31 men. He last saw the Nationals on June 18, when he threw eight scoreless innings and whiffed 11 batters. I In his most recent starts, he limited the Philadelphia Phillies to a single run on three hits over seven innings, striking out 12. In that game, threw 111 pitches — 71 for strikes. He has struck out at least ten batters in six of his 16 starts so far this season.

Who Will Open for the Nationals?

Opposing deGrom is Tanner Roark, who is the weak link in the Nationals’ rotation right now. In his last start, he only went three innings, giving up three runs on four hits. He also walked five batters, as he just threw 46 strikes in his 85 pitches. He is in a real funk right now, having permitted 22 runs combined in his last four starts. I like the Mets to take this win on Wednesday night as I see deGrom outpitching the struggling Roark.
