Wednesday’s Top MLB Betting Picks & Previews

Now that the Confederations Cup is winding down and we’re waiting for the NFL training camps to open, it’s time to focus on Major League Baseball as you look at the wagers that you want to make for the week. As you gauge your baseball odds, take a look at three MLB betting matchups we’ve picked for Wednesday. The Minnesota Twins are in Boston to take on the Red Sox, the New York Yankees take on the White Sox in the Second City, and St. Louis is out in the desert to face the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Wednesday’s Top MLB Betting Picks & Previews

Minnesota Twins at Boston Red Sox

When: Wednesday, June 28th, 2017. 7:10pm ET Where: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts TV: FSNO (Minnesota) / NESN (Boston) Radio: TIBN (Minnesota) / WCEC 1490 AM (Boston) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Adalberto Meija (2-3, 4.93 ERA) (MIN) vs Rick Porcello (4-9, 5.00 ERA) (BOS) The Twins are fresh off their weekend sweep of the Indians in Cleveland — their first road sweep of the Tribe in 26 seasons — and have moved back into first place in that American League Central. Adalberto Meija needed 104 pitches to get through five innings for the Twins against Cleveland on Friday, but he kept the Tribe off the scoreboard, limiting them to two hits. However, he walked five men and was lucky to stay out of major trouble. It’s that lack of command that has kept him from progressing further into ballgames.

What About Boston’s Rick Porcello?

Rick Porcello has some gargantuan numbers, including those nine losses so far on the season, but he was stellar in his last start, going 6 ⅓ innings and scattering eight hits, fanning eight Angels to guide the Red Sox to a win — his first victory since May 23. He threw 102 pitches in his outing — 73 for strikes. The Red Sox are still sputtering a bit in their bid to take over first place in the American League East, but if Porcello shows that form again, the Red Sox should win. I like Boston in this matchup.

N.Y. Yankees at Chicago White Sox

When: Wednesday, June 28th, 2017. 8:10pm ET Where: Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago, Illinois TV: YES (Yankees) / CSN-C+ (White Sox) Radio: WFAN 660 (Yankees) / WLS 890 (White Sox) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Masahiro Tanaka (5-7, 5.74 ERA) (NY) vs Carlos Rodon (0-0, 0.00 ERA) (CHI) Masahiro Tanaka has been inconsistent this year, but he comes into this game following his best start of the season. On Friday against the Texas Rangers, perhaps motivated by his pitching opponent (fellow countryman Yu Darvish), Tanaka threw eight scoreless innings, fanning nine Rangers and scattering three hits, taking a no-decision in a game the Yankees would win in ten innings, 2-1. Tanaka’s work on Friday should give his coaching staff some optimism going into Thursday’s start, as the White Sox do not have an offense that can keep pace with the Rangers, so Tanaka should have an easier time managing the opposing bats.

What About Carlos Rondon?

Carlos Rodon makes this game a bit of an enigma for the White Sox. He makes his first start of the season on Wednesday night, as he has been on the disabled list for the first part of the season thanks to left biceps bursitis. He did make four rehab starts prior to returning to the major league squad, three of which took place at the Triple-A level. His last start, though, only lasted 4 ⅓ innings, so while Rodon does not expect any pitch count limitations, his durability could be a concern. In his lifetime, Rodon has an 18-16 record and a 3.90 ERA — but the rust is almost certain to show. I like the Yankees in this game.

The Diamondbacks are favorites in the MLB betting odds to beat the Cardinals.

St. Louis Cardinals at Arizona Diamondbacks

When: Wednesday, June 28th, 2017. 9:40pm ET Where: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona TV: FS-M (Cardinals) / FS-A (Diamondbacks) Radio: KMOX 1120 (Cardinals) / KHOV 105.1 (Diamondbacks) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: Diamondbacks at -150 to win series Pitching Matchup: Adam Wainwright (7-5, 5.35 ERA) (STL) vs Zack Godley (3-1, 2.53 ERA) (ARI) Adam Wainwright, the erstwhile ace for the Cardinals, had taken a beating in three straight starts, only lasting a combined 10 ⅓ innings and permitting 20 combined earned runs. However, on Friday night, he only permitted a single earned run, throwing 66 strikes in 97 pitches. Given that two of his recent outings had each seen him permit nine earned runs, the Cardinals were good to see his improvement, even though the Cardinals fell to the Pirates, 4-3. Zack Godley has pitched very well since sliding into Shelby Miller’s slot in the Diamondbacks’ rotation. He has not permitted more than three earned runs in any of his starts this season, and he has fanned 16 batters combined in his last two outings.

How Did Godley Do Last Time He Started?

In his last start, he went seven innings and gave up three runs on just four hits — and if he had come out at the end of the seventh, that would have been just one earned run, but he ran into trouble in the eighth and had to come out without having retired any batters. I see Godley outdueling Wainwright — and I see those Diamondback bats giving Godley plenty of run support.
