The month of August has been tough for Touki Toussaint. He finished the month of July with five strong shutout innings in a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Indians, but in two August starts against Texas and the Yankees, he has permitted eight runs on 11 hits, including a pair of home runs, over 10 ⅓ combined innings. He has gotten 18 of those 31 outs via the strikeout, but he has issued nine walks. The White Sox haven’t helped Toussaint out much as of late; in five of his last seven starts, the Chicago offense has managed to score either one or zero runs.

Kyle Hendricks got torched for seven runs on eight hits over four innings in an 8-0 loss to Atlanta on August 4. With that start aside, Hendricks has allowed no more than three earned runs in a start since July 14. Most recently, he held the Mets to a pair of runs on five hits, including a home run, over five innings, striking out six and walking two. He has made three starts since then, two against Cleveland one against the Yankees, and he has allowed five runs (four earned) over 16 combined innings, allowing 13 hits (with one home run), striking out 11 while walking four. His ERA was 3.88 when he went on the injured list, and now it has dropped to 3.55.

The Cubs have three off days within a week, so they have some flexibility with respect tot heir starters. This means that Wednesday isn’t going to be a day when they have to call someone up from the minor leagues to make a spot start or cobble together a bullpen committee game. With Javier Assad and Drew Smyly looking for a spot, either in the rotation or the bullpen, the Cubs have some options ahead of Wednesday.
