There are many people who will suggest that Bryant probably should have retired last season, but the Lakers (2-14) has earned the right to go out on his own terms. He will be leaving behind a Lakers team that is as poor as it has ever been. The Lakers are on a 6-game losing skid, and their performances have not been helped by an aging Bryant who certainly looks as though his skill set has diminished pretty badly. Bryant is no longer the leading scorer on the team, as his average is slightly off the pace being set by Jordan Clarkson, who is averaging a meager 15.6 PPG. The Lakers are a team that is struggling to score this season, and they have also been pretty sloppy in their own end. It’s tough to imagine this team without Bryant in the line-up, but it will perhaps be the beginning of the major overhaul that is required to get this team back to its glory days.
With an 0-18 record, the Philadelphia 76ers are now tied for the worst start to the season in NBA history. A loss to the Lakers on Tuesday could see them set a record for futility that no-one wants to hold. The fact of the matter is that this team really only have themselves to blame for being in this position. In the last 5 games, the 76ers have held the lead heading into the 4th quarter, but have found ways to totally implode and lose each and every time. They have an implosion of another kind to deal with, as Jahlil Okafor is now making headlines for all the wrong reasons, giving the franchise headaches to deal with both off the court and on. There seems to be a sort of inevitability to this losing streak, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see that 0-19 record come in, and then continue to stretch on even further. I’m not sure that will happen, though.
