The Dallas Mavericks were headed to another frustrating loss on Tuesday night, with a low-energy first half marked by poor shooting by everyone not named Luka Doncic and minimal effort on the boards. With 33.9 seconds left, they were trailing the New York Knicks by nine after drawing within two a couple times in the fourth. Then the Mavericks did something that no team had done in 20 years – overcome a deficit of at least nine points in the last 35 seconds of a game. Teams had faced that situation 13,884 times during that stretch before the Mavericks pulled off the dramatic comeback. Doncic had six of the nine points in the comeback, and Spencer Dinwiddie nailed a three-ball for the rest. Doncic also made individual history, setting a Mavericks record with 60 points in a game (the previous record, 53, had belonged to Dirk Nowitzki since 2004). He also had 21 rebounds and 10 assists, completing the first 60-20-10 triple-double in league history and scoring or assisting on 85 of the team’s 126 points. Issues with offensive depth, defense and rebounding have the Mavericks fairly low on this odds list (and just a few games over .500 despite the heroics of Doncic this season). The Brooklyn Nets have now won nine in a row to tie Milwaukee and Boston for the longest winning streak in the NBA this season. Kevin Durant looks like he’s back in MVP form, and the team seems to have put its drama behind it – although there’s nothing like winning to paper over chemistry issues.
The Boston Celtics started out 21-5 before going into a 1-5 skid. Since then, though, they have won three in a row that includes a 21-point rout of the Milwaukee Bucks on Christmas Day. The Clippers come to town on Thursday in a possible NBA Finals preview, and then they meet Denver two days later.
The Denver Nuggets also have a potential MVP in Nikola Jokic, angling for his third straight trophy. Now that his supporting cast is healthy, the Nuggets are climbing the standings in a Western Conference that, for the first time in several seasons, does not have Golden State, Memphis or Phoenix winning what seems like 90% of their games.
The Milwaukee Bucks have dropped three in a row and four of six, matching their longest losing streak in the last two seasons. Their defense has tumbled from the league’s best to having a rating in the bottom five, and their offensive has slipped to 22nd.
The New Orleans Pelicans won seven in a row before dropping four straight, but they have bounced back with a three-game winning streak despite the absence of Zion Williamson (helath and safety protocols). Naji Marshall has started in his stead, putting up 15.3 points, 6.3 boards and 3.0 assists per game, with a career-best 22 points against Indiana in a Monday win.
The L.A. Clippers have won seven of their last nine and finally have all their stars healthy. Kawhi Leonard set a season best with 35 minutes in a win in Toronto, giving him 69 minutes combined in his last two games. He’s not scoring much yet, but he is drawing attention from opposing defenses.
