Portland has had what can only be described as one of the best seasons in recent franchise history. They won their first division title since the 91-92 season (discounting the strike-shortened 99 season), yet they are still viewed as being one of the teams likely to make an early exit. They have hobbled down the home stretch in the regular season, hampered by more than their fair share of injuries. Arron Afflalo was the latest to get hit by the injury bug, as the Blazers have now slipped to three consecutive losses. They have been less than impressive on the defensive side of the ball during this stretch, which is not a trend you want to set heading into the playoffs. The Wednesday night match-up on the road in Dallas is the last chance for this team to end the regular season on a positive note.
There are very few positives to be gleaned from this Dallas Mavericks team at this stage of the season. Yes, they are in the playoffs, but they look old, tired, and totally disjointed. There are rumors that all is not well in the locker room, which is something that is easy to believe when you see their total lack of chemistry on the court. Ask the top seeds in the Western Conference which team they would most like to face in the opening round and you would likely find that Dallas would be the unanimous winner. The games they have won of late have all been against teams out of the playoff picture, while the losses are piling up against those who are in.
