The feeling before the season began was that if the Indiana Pacers (8-5) were going to be successful, they would have to rely heavily on their play on the defensive end of the court. Through the first 13 games of the season it’s fair to say that they have accomplished that goal. The Pacers are 4th in the NBA in points allowed per game average at just 94.5. The offense is averaging just a touch under 100 PPG, but that number will continue to climb if they can put in the sort of offensive performances that they managed in their last 2 games. The Pacers knocked off the 76ers 112-85, and then followed that up with a 123-86 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Neither of those opponents are lighting the world on fire at the moment, but those sorts of margins of victory have to be confidence builders, nonetheless. The Pacers have to be particularly pleased with the play of Paul George, as he is currently on pace to have a career year.
The 3-4 start that the Washington Wizards made to the season came as something of a surprise, but it’s beginning to look as though they are turning things around, as they had into this one on a modest 3-game winning streak. They are sure to have taken heart from the return of Bradley Beal from injury, and while he is yet to fully get his groove back, it’s clear that he has a major impact on the success of this team. Particularly pleasing for the Wizards during this winning streak is the fact that they held all 3 of their opponents under 100 points, which has helped bring down their bloated points against per game average to a more respectable 105.3. This is a team that can score, but they have had trouble getting those wins on the night when the defense seems to be asleep. They are starting to look like a more balanced team now, and I think that will continue as the season progresses.
