Some unlikely heroes are already emerging in the 2022 NBA playoffs. Anthony Edwards put up 36 points in his playoff debut with the Minnesota Timberwolves, as the seventh seed went to Memphis and stole Game 1, as the energy that Patrick Beverley has brought this team seems to be spreading up and down the roster. Jalen Brunson became the first Dallas Maverick ever to score more than 40 points in a playoff game without committing a single turnover as the Mavs came back to beat Utah in Game 2. Tyrese Maxey came out of nowhere to drop 38 on Toronto in Philadelphia’s 131-111 Game 1 victory. NBA News: Playoff Parlay Picks
Tuesday Winnings
Atlanta-Miami “under” 219 points / Memphis (-6.5) to beat Minnesota ATS
→ Atlanta Hawks (+7) at Miami Heat (O/U 219) (7:30 pm ET, TNT)
Miami took advantage of the rest differential they had over Atlanta in Game 1; the Heat had not had to play in a week, while the Hawks had to win two games and travel from Georgia to Ohio and then to South Florida to get into the postseason. No wonder the Hawks only shot 38.7% overall and 27.8% from behind the arc, as tired legs lead to shots clanking off the front of the rim. Trae Young looked particularly drained, as he made just one shot on the night.
The final score was 115-91 (206 points), and the point total for Game 2 is 219. The two teams have only gone over 219 once in five meetings this season. The Heat shot 52.4% overall and 47.4% from behind the arc; neither of those numbers is likely to recur in Game 2 as the team drifts back town toward its mean. I expect a closer game – but I also expect this game to stay under that total.
→ Minnesota Timberwolves (+6.5) at Memphis Grizzlies (240.5) (8:30 pm ET, NBA TV)
Minnesota has nothing to lose in this series, as getting out of the play-in with the seventh seed was enough of a victory. The good news for Timberwolves fans is that when you don’t have success in your past, you have no expectations, and so Minnesota can play without cluttered minds. Will Minnesota shoot 50% from the floor in Game 2? It’s doubtful, as the Grizzlies will find their defense – and the Grizzlies own’t brick 74.1% of their own shots from downtown. I see the Grizzlies restoring order and sending the series north tied at a game apiece – and doing so by at least seven points.
Wednesday Winnings
Brooklyn (+3.5) to cover against Boston / Milwaukee (-9.5) to win and cover against Chicago
→ Brooklyn Nets at Boston Celtics (7:00 pm ET, TNT)
The Nets are a Jayson Tatum three-ball away from already having snagged home court advantage away from Boston, and they should go back to Brooklyn with the series tied at a game apiece. Kyrie Irving looks all dialed in for this series, so with Kevin Durant the Nets have a 1-2 scoring punch that is more solid than what Boston brings. The Celtics have the better defense, but this isn’t the old-school East, where you had to prepare for a mugging in the lane each time down the floor. The Nets have the offensive weapons to get this win.
→ Chicago Bulls at Milwaukee Bucks (9:30 pm ET, TNT)
The Bulls are 1-6 against the spread in their last seven games, while the Bucks are 9-1 straight up in their last ten games against the Bulls. If you can find a book that is lower than 9 ½ points, jump on that spread instead, but I don’t see Milwaukee having a hard time with a Bulls team that only had two wins on the year against any of the top four teams in the Eastern Conference.
