Gonzaga just finished the first unbeaten regular season in the history of the program, going 24-0. Yes, a lot of those wins came against West Coast Conference opponents, but they also beat Kansas, Virginia, Iowa, West Virginia and conference foe BYU twice, all of whom rank in KenPom’s top 25. Next up: a swim through the WCC Tournament. Getting to the Big Dance with an unbeaten record will be much more impressive.
Michigan has moved up to #2 in the AP poll, sliding past Baylor, and a huge reason for this is the play of Franz Wagner. The sophomore forward is ninth in KenPom’s player algorithm in large part due to his shooting percentages: 63.0 percent from inside the arc, 37.1 percent form outside it and 84.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Baylor finally suffered a loss, going down to Kansas, but by beating West Virginia on Tuesday, the Bears clinched their first regular-season conference championship in 71 years. In that season, the Bears went all the way to the Final Four. Can they get that far this season? We’ll know more after we see how they play in the Big 12 Tournament.
Illinois made a huge statement with a 76-53 win at Michigan on Tuesday. Winning that emphatically, on the road, without Ayo Dosunmu, posed some questions that the Wolverines will have to answer during the Big Ten Tournament. Kofi Cockburn, Trent Frazier and Andre Curbelo had huge nights for the Illini in the win.
Iowa beat Ohio State on Sunday, giving the Hawkeyes seven wins against ranked opponents. The only other team in the nation with seven wins over ranked foes is Kansas. Iowa has won five of their last six, with the lone loss coming against Michigan — but by 22 points. The Big Ten Tournament is likely to be the most intriguing conference tournament in the nation.
West Virginia went 6-1 in February, with their only setback coming at home in double overtime against Oklahoma. They did open March with a loss against Baylor, but given that Oscar Tshiebwe left the program in December, and that the Mountaineers have simply continued to improve in his absence, the Mountaineers are primed for a potential sleeper role in the Final Four.
Arkansas has one of the best freshmen in the nation, in Moses Moody, who scored a combined 42 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, dealing out nine assists, in games against Alabama and LSU. The Razorbacks have won nine of their last ten and could skate to an SEC Tournament win.
Alabama is bringing NBA action to the SEC, with big guards, strong power forwards with solid shooting, long wings and centers who can also shoot while defending the rim. That means the Tide won’t be looking for traditional centers as long as Nate Oats is coaching the program, but the team is still coming together ahead of the postseason.
Florida State will win the ACC regular-season title if they beat Boston College on Wednesday night; the Eagles have not been playing well this season, so that seems like something we can count on. However, I didn’t think the Seminoles would lose to North Carolina last weekend.
