How to Bet on Minnesota vs Iowa

Written by on February 12, 2016

This Sunday, the Minnesota Golden Gophers head south to take on the #4 Iowa Hawkeyes in Big Ten basketball action. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm Eastern time. The Gophers (6-18) are in 13th place in the Big Ten (yes, that is possible) and are coming off an 82-74 home loss to Michigan on Wednesday. The Hawkeyes (19-5) are in third place in the Big Ten after their loss to Indiana. Let’s take a look at this potential trap game for Iowa. Why Should You Bet on the Golden Gophers?

Obviously, Minnesota is an extremely long shot to win this one. They are heading on the road to take on one of the best teams in the nation, after that team suffered a disappointing loss. However, (as was the case with Kentucky a couple weeks ago) a team that loses can end up falling into a trap the next time. Kentucky lost at Kansas and then was in such a funk that they blew a 21-point lead to unheralded Tennessee the next game out and ended up losing that one too. Minnesota is not as good a team as Tennessee — the Golden Gophers have yet to win a game in Big Ten play — but if you’re looking at a 15-20 point spread, you might consider Minnesota, but there are probably better plays for you.

Why Would You Bet on the Iowa Hawkeyes?

hawkseyes-vs-golden-gophers-college-basketball-pick Iowa is still #7 in the nation in RPI ranking, even after the loss at Indiana. Indiana was up by 16 fairly early in that game, but Iowa stormed back to tie. This is not a team that is going to roll over — and it’s not a team that has fallen in any of the “trap” games so far this season. Jarrod Uthoff continues to be the driving force fo the Hawkeye offensive attack, and he put up 24 points. Adam Woodbury put up 13 points and grabbed 15 boards in a strong effort for Iowa — but it just turned out not to be enough. The records of Maryland, Indiana and Iowa are all now identical in Big Ten play, meaning that there is a logjam at the top of the conference that could have significant impact on seeding — both for the conference tournament and possibly for the NCAA tournament. This is a team that will be ready to make a statement on Sunday.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

This is going to be a mauling by the Hawkeyes. I’m picking them to take a lot of their frustrations out on Minnesota and prevail in a big way, 82-57.
