Purdue Boilermakers vs Gonzaga Bulldogs
(11:30 pm ET, ESPN)
Purdue had a big win over West Virginia on Thanksgiving to start their run in the Phil Knight Legacy. Zach Edey put up 24 points and 12 boards to key the 80-68 wins. Purdue coughed the ball up 18 times but was able to limit the damage in transition. Masin Gillis contributed 14 points, and Brandon Newman added eight. Purdue had shot 44% from the floor overall coming into the tournament but just 29% from behind the arc. On Thursday, though, the Boilermakers found their stroke, knocking 47% of their shots down from distance. On defense, Purdue has shut the opposition down, holding them under 40% shooting from the floor. Can they maintain that against Gonzaga, one of the top teams in shooting in the nation?
Gonzaga routed Portland State in the first round of the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament, the third straight win for the Bulldogs since losing at Texas last week. They dominated Kentucky and then routed Portland State in the first round of the tournament. Malachi Smith put up a season-best 23 points, one of six Bulldogs in double figures. Gonzaga built a 27-point lead in the first half, shooting 66% before the intermission, to overwhelm the Vikings. Final Score Prediction: Gonzaga 74, Purdue 70.
Oregon Ducks vs Michigan State Spartans
(11:59 pm ET, ESPN)
On the loser’s side of the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament, Oregon meets Michigan State. The Ducks fell to Connecticut, 83-59, in the first round. The Ducks’ offense has not been that prolific so far, averaging just 66.4 points per game. They shot just 42.6% from the floor against Connecticut, clanking two-thirds of their three-point shots. Kel’el Ware led the Ducks in scoring with 18 points and pulled down nine boards. N’Faly Dante chipped in 15 points and three assists, and Will Richardson scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds. The Ducks’ defense has been decent, permitting 62.8 points per game, but that defense did not show up against Connecticut.
Michigan State lost by 11 to Alabama in the first round of the tournament, ending a two-game winning streak. The Spartans shot poorly, making just 38.7% of their shots overall. From three-point land, they made only 28.6% of their shots. Tyson Walker led the way with 21 points, three reboudns and four assists. A.J. Hoggard chipped in 18 points and four rebounds, and Joey Hauser contributed nine points and five rebounds. The defense has only permitted 69.6 points per game, but like the Ducks, the Spartans need a better defensive effort. Final Score Prediction: Michigan State 70, Oregon 67.
