Top NCAA Basketball Betting Picks of the Week – January 29th

Tuesday, January 30

North Carolina at Clemson (7:00pm ET, ESPN)

North Carolina is struggling to stay afloat in the top half of the ACC standings. They had won four in a row in conference play before losing by 11 at unranked Virginia Tech and then by four at home to unranked N.C. State. That loss to Virginia Tech saw Joel Berry and Luke Maye each post 23 points for the Tar Heels, but no other player had more than five in the game. North Carolina is more talented than both of the teams that they lost to this week, but they came out flat on offense up in Blacksburg and then didn’t play defense at home against the Wolfpack. They travel to face a Clemson team looking for redemption after losing by eight to North Carolina when the teams met in Chapel Hill. Since then, the Tigers have beaten Notre Dame, lost at Virginia by 25 (only scoring 36 points in the process) and edged Georgia Tech on the road by two points. In that loss to Virginia, they had 20 points in the first 12 minutes; over the last 28 minutes, they only managed 16 more. They did lose Donte Grantham for the season with a blown ACL in that win over Notre Dame, but if Clemson is going to contend, they need some resilience from the rest of their bench. I see the Tar Heels using this game to make a statement. NCAA Basketball Betting Prediction: North Carolina 80, Clemson 76

Wednesday, January 31

Houston at Cincinnati (7:00pm ET, CBS Sports)

The conference portion of Houston’s schedule this year has been massively inconsistent, with a 33-point win over Tulsa and a 14-point win over then-#7 Wichita State at home, with an 18-point loss at Wichita State and a nine-point loss at Tulane coming along as well. They did rout South Florida at home, 63-40, their last time out, and now they head on the road looking for another big win to boost their tournament resume as they face Cincinnati. The Bearcats remain unbeaten in AAC play, with an impressive 33-point win over Temple and a 34-point win over Memphis. They have yet to play Tulane, Houston or Wichita State, though, and they still have to play at SMU, where they have yet to win in conference play. They have a solid inside-out presence that makes them difficult to beat, but losses at Xavier and to Florida make many wonder if they will contend for bigger stakes this year. Can Houston deliver an upset at Cincinnati? I just don’t trust the Cougars on the road. NCAA Basketball Betting Prediction: Cincinnati 80, Houston 68

Saturday, February 3

Texas Tech at TCU (2:00pm ET, ESPNU

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have a big road win at Kansas and a huge home win over then #2 West Virginia on their resume this season. However, they have also lost at Texas and Iowa State (both unranked) in Big 12 play so far, just a sign of how even the Big 12 is — but also a sign of how inconsistent Texas Tech has been so far in their bid to contend for a conference title. In an inter-conference game, they won at South Carolina, 70-63, thanks to 31 points from Keenan Evans (with 18 of those coming in the last 10 minutes of the game). Can the Red Raiders win in another tough road environment when they visit Fort Worth? TCU has also struggled with consistency — and they don’t have as many of the signature wins in conference play that Texas Tech does. They did beat West Virginia at home, but the Mountaineers have long struggled to find conference consistency on the road. TCU has also lost to Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas State, and in their inter-conference game on Saturday, they fell at Vanderbilt by three. Dropping five of seven has sent the Horned Frogs down the standings and could make an NCAA bid tough to justify. Can they get back to their winning ways against another team struggling against consistency? NCAA Basketball Betting Prediction: TCU 92, Texas Tech 90
