Top NCAAB Betting Picks for the Week – December 11th Edition

Tuesday, December 12

Mississippi State at Cincinnati (7:00pm ET, ESPN2)

Cincinnati dropped five slots in the rankings after falling at Xavier (a game that had Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin complaining afterward about the way Xavier players talked to him, of all things) and at home to #5 Florida. Now sitting at #17, the Bearcats look to get back on a winning streak with the Bulldogs coming to town. Cincinnati needs to shore up their late-game defense; against Florida, things were tied at 60 until Florida scored the last six points of the game. Mississippi State is one of seven teams that have not lost any games yet in the NCAA, but they really haven’t played anyone of note. They did beat Dayton at home, 61-59, but that’s really the only non-directional school or non-cupcake that the Bulldogs have played. Their strength of schedule is #349 out of the 351 Division I teams. Quinndary Weatherspoon is the highlight of the Mississippi State roster, but it’s hard to evaluate a program when they haven’t played anyone at their level. NCAAB Betting Prediction: Cincinnati 72, Mississippi State 64

Wednesday, December 13

Villanova at Temple (7:00pm ET, ESPN2)

Villanova sits at #1 in the country and is one of the nation’s unbeaten teams. However, they hadn’t played anyone of note until they took down #12 Gonzaga at home last week, 88-72, dominating the battle of the boards. They continue their tour of the Philadelphia Big Five when they visit Temple on Tuesday night. Temple is 6-2 so far on the season, and their most impressive win nas come at home over Wisconsin last week. Losses at LaSalle and George Washington pose some serious questions about Temple’s competitiveness in this game. The Owls did beat St. Joseph’s, 81-78, on Saturday afternoon. However, I don’t see them staying with Villanova. NCAAB Betting Prediction: Villanova 80, Temple 68

Saturday, December 16

Butler at Purdue (12:00pm ET, FOX)

Butler enters this contest at 8-2 and has rattled off a five-game winning streak, with such victims as Ohio State (by 1) and Utah (by 12). Their losses have come at Maryland and at home to Texas, but this streak shows that Butler may have had some success at shoring up some big rebounding problems and some issues with getting balance on offense. They visit a Purdue team that will come in on a six-game winning streak. They have knocked off then-#17 Louisville, then-#2 Arizona, Maryland and Northwestern during that streak and routed IUPUI on Sunday for coach Matt Painter’s 300th career victory. Purdue combines a dominant frontcourt with quicker guards than what they had last year. That added speed should be the difference against Butler. NCAAB Betting Prediction: Purdue 78, Butler 70

Indiana at Notre Dame (2:30pm ET, FOX)

Indiana enters this game at 5-5 and still have some real questions to answer as far as defense and rebounding go before they can consider themselves contenders in the Big Ten. They opened the season with an embarrassing home loss to Indiana State, losing by 21, and they have also suffered double-digit losses against Seton Hall, Duke and Michigan. They lost on Saturday to Louisville, a program in some significant turmoil after the firing of Rick Pitino. The team travels to an 8-2 Notre Dame, who have lost to then-#3 Michigan State (understandable) and then to Ball State at home (not so understandable). They did knock off Delaware on the road by 24 points in their last game. Notre Dame has a solid interior game that should be able to exploit Indiana’s problems in the paint. NCAAB Betting Prediction: Notre Dame 82, Indiana 68
