2017 SEC Championship Odds & Preview: Auburn vs. Georgia

Written by on November 29, 2017

When Auburn and Georgia take the field on Saturday afternoon to contend for the SEC Championship in Atlanta, they will also be playing for one of the four slots in the College Football Playoff. If Georgia wins, they will only have one loss — to these same Auburn Tigers, who beat them four weeks ago. If Auburn wins, they will advance with two losses but will have beaten the #1 team in the nation twice (beating Georgia and Alabama three weeks apart, when each had the top ranking in the nation) and then beaten Georgia a second time. Georgia took the SEC East title with relative ease, while Auburn had to fight through LSU, Mississippi State and — in a dramatic Iron Bowl win — Alabama, a week ago. Take a look at our college football odds preview on this game that is sure to be a classic.

Why should you bet on the Tigers?

Auburn had to win out to get this chance at the College Football Playoff. They lost at Clemson in non-conference play and then took a bad defeat at LSU back on October 14. However, Auburn then went on the same sort of run that they made in 2010 and 2013, years in which they also beat Georgia and Alabama en route to postseason glory. When Auburn played Georgia at home four weeks ago, they rolled up 488 yards of offense, compared to just 230 for Georgia — and that Bulldog rushing attack was held to just 46 yards. On the passing side, Bulldog quarterback Jake Fromm went just 13 for 28 for 184 yards. Jarrett Stidham was magnificent against Georgia in that game, going 16 for 23 for 214 yards and three touchdowns. He also showed his moxie in the Iron Bowl, completing 75 percent of his passes against the Crimson Tide and leading the Tigers on drive after drive, chewing up clock and keeping Jalen Hurts and the Alabama offense on the sidelines. Tailback Kerryon Johnson picked up 167 yards in Auburn’s win over Georgia and was a major force in Auburn’s win over Alabama. He had to leave the Iron Bowl late with an undisclosed injury and his health remains a question mark over the SEC title game. If Johnson can play, though, the Auburn offense will have a huge weapon that should help them.

Why should you put your money on the Bulldogs?

In the weeks since their loss to Auburn, Georgia has dominated their opposition, routing Kentucky 42-13 and Georgia Tech 38-7. The Georgia Tech was particularly impressive as the Bulldogs shut down a triple option attack that is different from most of the offenses that they see, outrushing the Yellow Jackets, 247 to 188 on the game. Nick Chubb has reasserted himself as one of the most bruising running backs in the nation, but he also has that quick acceleration that makes him impossible to catch once he hits the hole. The Georgia defense will be looking for redemption here as well. They permitted 40 points in that loss at Auburn, and the Bulldogs’ defense had, to that point, impressed viewers with their sideline-to-sideline speed and the physicality of their tackling. Auburn shredded their secondary — and it will surprise me if they have not made numerous adjustments in their coverage approach to keep that from happening again.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I still view Georgia as a team that has not built up that experience in winning crucial matchups to take this kind of victory. They are playing this game in Georgia, so I expect a sea of red in the stands, but Auburn has picked up that in-game experience in big wins this season that Georgia still lacks. I see Auburn winning the title and advancing to the College Football Playoff with a 27-20 win.
