2019 College Football Week 5 Odds, Overview & Top Picks

Written by on September 23, 2019

In Week 4 of the 2019 college football season, we saw Wisconsin make a major statement as they routed visiting Michigan, 35-14. The Badgers still have to travel to Michigan State and Ohio State, but for now they have to be considered co-favorites to win the Big Ten, along with the Buckeyes. SMU beat then-#25 TCU on the road to win the Iron Skillet and move to 4-0 for the first time since the 1984 season. Tulane used a fake spike play as part of a two-play scoring drive that beat the Houston Cougars, going 71 yards in 15 seconds. Pitt ended UCF’s 27-game regular-season winning streak by using a version of the “Philly Special” to win the game. Washington State hosted UCLA and had nine touchdown passes, moving out to a 32-point lead at one point. However, the Bruins came all the way back to win, 67-63. Yes, that’s a football score, not a basketball score. What can you expect this week? Check out our College Football Week 5 betting picks from the gridiron. As always, home teams are in all caps.

2019 College Football Week 5 Odds, Overview & Top Picks

#17 WASHINGTON (-9.5) over USC

BYU beat USC two weeks ago. Washington went to BYU this past weekend and demolished the Cougars. However, USC beat Utah on Friday night, showing some significant improvement. Which Trojans will show up at Husky Stadium? We will be watching a potential Pac-12 Championship game here, but Washington has the talent and the scheme to beat the Trojans by double figures. College Football Week 5 Prediction: Washington 34, USC 20

#10 NOTRE DAME (-10.5) over #18 Virginia

The Cavaliers had a hard time beating Old Dominion this past weekend, while Notre Dame went down fairly big early to Georgia and stormed back, losing by just six points. Ian Book is looking more and more like the real deal again at quarterback, and while Virginia is vastly improved under Bronco Mendenhall, I see the Fighting Irish taking out some frustration from last week on the Cavaliers at home. College Football Week 5 Prediction: Notre Dame 30, Virginia 16

#5 Ohio State (-16.5) over NEBRASKA

Yes, Nebraska went to Columbus last year and almost pulled off the huge upset. This time, the Buckeyes will be ready. They look even better in 2019 than they did in 2018, although their opposition has not been all that stout yet (although some observers think Cincinnati is a tougher team than their performance against Ohio State indicated). Nebraska lost to Iowa this past week, so while they do get Ohio State at home, it is hard to see them slowing down the Buckeyes’ offense. College Football Week 5 Prediction: Ohio State 37, Nebraska 17

Mississippi State (+11) over #7 AUBURN

Yes, Auburn beat Texas A&M last week, giving them two signature wins along with that victory over Oregon. Mississippi State is a tough test for the Tigers, even at home, and if freshman quarterback Bo Dix is not careful with the ball, this could turn into an upset. I see Auburn taking the win, but that spread is much too big. College Football Week 5 Prediction: Auburn 20, Mississippi State 16

#8 WISCONSIN (-22.5) over Northwestern

Northwestern has scored 47 points in their first three games — including non-conference action supposed to be more forgiving. Wisconsin has permitted 14 points in three games — all 14 against Michigan last week. The Badgers’ offense has been dominant, using a grinding line and running game to dominate the rhythm of each contest. They beat Michigan at home by 21, and Michigan is better than Northwestern so far this year. College Football Week 5 Prediction: Wisconsin 41, Northwestern 13

#19 UTAH (-6.5) over Washington State

Utah may have the best defense in the Pac-12; as we saw last week, Washington State largely does not believe in defense. The Utes have the line and the secondary to slow down the Cougars’ passing game, and they also have the offense to move through the Washington States scheme. College Football Week 5 Prediction: Utah 30, Washington State 17
