The Falcons of the Air Force Academy enter the hallowed grounds of Michigan Stadium on Saturday afternoon as they prepare to take on the Wolverines in a non-conference tilt. Air Force has already had their bye, taking it in Week Two after a 62-0 shellacking of VMI in their season opener. Michigan enters the game at 2-0 after beating the Cincinnati Bearcats at home on Saturday, 36-14. The teams last met in 2012, with Michigan taking the home victory, 31-25. Why should you bet on the Falcons?

If you saw Tennessee struggle against Georgia Tech in Week One, then you know just how potent the triple option can be. Not many teams run the offense, so preparing to defend it can be maddening — and with the right personnel, it can be hard to stop. Air Force gained 647 yards against VMI, rolling up 32 first downs and holding onto the ball for more than 35 minutes. Quarterback Arion Worthman keyed the attack, going 8 for 12 for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also running for 33 yards and a touchdown. Timothy McVey had 10 carries for 98 yards and another touchdown, and Parker Wilson and Nolan Eriksen combined for 90 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries. So this is an offense that can move. On the defensive side of the ball, Air Force will have a much bigger challenge from Wilton Speight and the Michigan offense than they did against VMI. If you think the Falcons can prevail here, then you see the option giving Michigan just enough fits to keep the Falcon offense on the field long enough to avoid falling behind by 3 ½ touchdowns. VMI was not able to score a single point against Air Force, but we feel confident that Michigan will be able to break through.

Why should you put your money on the Wolverines?

Even on a day when the offense is not firing on all cylinders, as was the case last week against Cincinnati, Michigan’s defense can step up and carry the game. Against the Bearcats, Michigan had a pair of defensive touchdowns and a safety as part of their scoring, and the Wolverines also rolled up 414 yards on offense and gained 16 first downs. Ball security was a concern for Michigan, as they gave the ball up twice, so if Michigan is going to cover this line, they will have to do a better job of hanging onto the ball. So far, Michigan has permitted just 15.5 points per game. They have not yet run into a triple option team this year, but they do have the sideline-to- sideline pursuit speed that teams need to keep up with an option attack. If you like Michigan here, you think that they can score relatively quickly, while also keeping Air Force from mounting sustained drives with that dangerous option attack.

Team Statistics

Offense:
  • Average Score For: 34.5
  • Total Yards: 423.5
  • Rush Yards: 204
  • Passing Yards: 219.5

  • Total Yards: 95
  • Rush Yards: 55

NCAAF Odds Pick and Final Score Prediction

I don’t see Michigan’s defense putting up 16 points again this weekend, as Air Force has shown that they can run the option with ball security. I also see that triple option giving Michigan some fits as they struggle to turn their plans against a scout defense into swift management of the Air Force option. So I see the first half finishing in relatively close fashion. After the intermission, I see the Wolverines pulling away as the game goes by. While Air Force will put up a strong first half (and cover) I see Michigan pulling away as the second half winds down and winning, 44-27.
