The college football world saw some order restored this past weekend, as Alabama came back from a one-touchdown deficit to run away from Georgia in the second half, as the Bulldogs once again failed to take down its SEC nemesis. South Carolina did make a statement, beating Auburn for the first time since 1933. We still have multiple teams that are ranked despite still having yet to play a game, as we’re still waiting for the Pac-12 and the Big Ten to begin play, so there is still some instability.
Take a look at our top sports betting picks against the spread for this weekend’s college football action.
NCAA News: ATS Picks for Week 8
Syracuse (+44.5) at Clemson
That might seem like an immense line. However, Clemson beat then-#7 Miami (FL) by 25…and then last week, when favored to win at Georgia Tech by 26 ½ points, rolled to a 73-7 shellacking, the biggest margin of victory ever in an ACC game. Next up for the Tigers comes a home game against the Syracuse Orange, current holders of a 1-4 record. They lost last week at home, 38-21….to Liberty. So there’s not a lot of hope for Orange fans, as their team has never faced a bigger point spread as an underdog in an ACC contest as they do this weekend. It’s true that Syracuse knocked off Clemson three years ago, as a 23 ½-point dog, but the likelihood of that is small. That’s a lot of points to give, but if you think Clemson will keep on making big statements, take the Tigers.

Iowa State (+3.5) at Oklahoma State
It’s hard to imagine this serving as a likely play-in for the Big 12 Championship, but these are two of the three teams that remain undefeated in Big 12 play (along with Kansas State). Oklahoma and Texas have already lost two conference games. The last five games between Iowa State and Oklahoma State have been decided by one score, and Mike Gundy has said that this OSU defense is the best one he’s had in his 16-year tenure in Stillwater. Iowa State has already knocked off Oklahoma, while Oklahoma State is still looking for its first signature win. I’m taking the Cyclones here, but this will be a game that goes back and forth until the final gun.

Cincinnati (-1) at SMU
This could be a preview of the AAC Championship, as these are the only unbeaten teams left in the conference. SMU has had a lot of injuries, including star wide receiver Reggie Roberson Jr, who is gone for the season due to a knee injury, and their defense has definitely been of the bend-but-don’t-break variety. That defense stood tall in a win over then-#25 Memphis, but they will get a test when Cincinnati comes to town. The Bearcats have not played any ranked opposition and has not played at all since October 3, when they barely fought off lowly South Florida. I’m taking the Mustangs to win at home.

Michigan (-3) at Minnesota
This is the season opener for both Big Ten schools. Minnesota won 11 games in 2019 and is looking to show that they aren’t a one-hit wonder. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh enters 2020 on a hot seat after failing to meet fan expectations (which means beating Ohio State) during his tenure. Defenses have not done well in the early going in the 2020 football season, so I see Minnesota winning in a barnburner.

Alabama (-19.5) at Tennessee
Given that Tennessee was ranked at one point, this is a huge point spread. However, since October 10, when the Volunteers led Georgia at halftime before falling apart, the team has been in free fall, while the Crimson Tide finally got their defense working against Georgia. I’m taking the Tide because I see this game getting ugly in the second half.
