The Iron Bowl is the name given to the rivalry between the University of Alabama and Auburn University, dating back to the teams’ first meeting in 1893, which Auburn won by the score of 32-22. Auburn also won the teams’ last contest in 2017, posting a major upset at home by the score of 26-14. Why should you bet on the Tigers?

Auburn has four losses this season, although they did rout Liberty in a 53-0 laugher last week. Quarterback Jarrett Stidham has not shown the same sort of moxie that he showed a year ago, when Auburn beat both Alabama and Georgia at home during the regular season last year. He has only 12 touchdown passes, as the Tigers’ offense has struggled, although his four interceptions show a degree of ball security. JaTarvious Whitlow is the Tigers’ leading runner, with just 716 yards and four scores in 11 games. The team has averaged 28.9 points per game, but that has included a mixture of huge outputs against cupcakes as well as shutdowns against SEC competition. This has been a series with some shocking endings, but the Tigers have only covered twice in their last nine games against a team with a record above .500 and just once in their last seven games after a straight-up win. Auburn has won just three of the last 10 Iron Bowls, but the knee of Tua Tagovailoa remains a question for Alabama, as his effectiveness has diminished slightly since the win over LSU. If you like Auburn, you see their defense slowing down Alabama’s offense — which did hang 50 on The Citadel last week but had looked human in their last two SEC wins — and the Tigers doing enough on offense to stay within 24 points.

Why should you put your money on the Crimson Tide?

This win would give Alabama a perfect 12-0 regular season heading into the SEC Championship. Even if Alabama were to suffer an upset here, they would still be the SEC West champs, so there is nothing on the line except that perfect record. Tagovailoa has thrown for 31 touchdowns this season against just two interceptions — although those two picks did come in the team’s last two SEC games. Joshua Jacobs leads the team with nine rushing touchdowns, and the other tailbacks on the team have added 11 more, so there is plenty of running balance to go along with the Tide’s passing game. The team scores 48.7 points per game and gives up just 13.1, so their average margin of victory is nine points larger than this spread. Alabama has covered in four of their last games overall and in five of their last six against a team with a record over .500. If you like the Tide, then you think that their track record of steamrolling SEC competition (and everyone else as well) will continue, and that Alabama will sniff out the Auburn defense in the early going and then pull away, making the last quarter (or even half) a laugher. There are some who think that Auburn will get up for this one and at least cover, but I feel fairly certain that LSU (who beat Auburn but lost to Alabama at home by 29) was up for them too.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I don’t like giving this many points in sports betting, because of all of the things that can happen late in garbage time to send a line like this the other way. However, given the dominance Alabama has shown all season against all comers, I’m picking them to win by the score of 44-16.
