Best 2017 College Football Value Bets of the Season

When it comes to college football betting, a lot of people like to focus on the big favorites — the Alabamas and the Ohio States and the Clemsons. The problem with that approach is that the lines are often so gargantuan that while your pick might win handily, they didn’t win handily enough for you to make any money. We’ve picked a couple of teams that represent solid betting picks for the 2017 College Football Season — teams that can pad your sports betting account.

Best College Football Value Bets of the Year

Texas Longhorns

Tom Herman has had success at each stop along his coaching journey, most recently taking the Houston Cougars to the brink of contention for that Group of Five slot in the top tier of bowl games this past season. Now he takes over the Texas Longhorns, a program looking to get back to the glory days of Mack Brown and that 2009 national championship. Herman should work wonders for the development of quarterback Shane Buechele. He has a rifle of an arm, but he threw more picks than touchdowns in his last four games last season. The tailback situation is led by Chris Warren, who looks to fill the shoes of D’Onta Foreman. Herman brings in his own offense with a team that he did not recruit, which could be interesting as far as fitting players into the right spots.

So What If Herman is Able to Get it Right?

If he can get that buy-in, then Texas should have a powerful offense. Todd Orlando comes in as the Longhorns’ new defensive coordinator, following Herman from Houston. Orlando’s system focuses on aggressive use of blitzes as well as physical hitting. They had mutliple looks last year, which confused a lot of offenses. Junior linebacker Malik Jefferson was a blue-chip prospect who had a down season in 2016, and alongside recruit Gary Johnson, should form the core of an assertive Texas defense.

Are the LSU Tigers a safe bet this season?

LSU Tigers

Ed Orgeron returns for his first full season at the helm of the Tigers. Formerly the defensive line coach, Orgeron took on the interim coaching role after the firing of Les Miles, pulling together a 6-2 record down the stretch. He will bring in Matt Canada as his new offensive coordinator, coming from a Pittsburgh program that was the only team to beat Clemson last year, piling up the points on a solid Tiger defense. Canada has worked well in a variety of formats, and he relies on misdirection and passing to get the ball down the field, which will be a major change from the plodding style that LSU showed in the past.

Who Will Be the Running Back?

The Tigers lost Leonard Fournette and wideout Malachi Dupre to the NFL. Derrius Guice returns to lead the rushing attack, but he was no slouch, averaging 9.0 yards per carry in relief of Fournette the last two seasons, and he is already a Heisman Trophy candidate. Either Lindsey Scott or Danny Etling will lead the offense. Etling started 10 games last year and put up 2,123 yards, with 11 scores and five interceptions. Scott was a redshirt freshman a year ago but lacks the size to start in the SEC, according to many writers. The offensive line is a rock wall that should help the Tigers in both phases of offense, so long as center Will Clapp can return healthy after missing the spring.

How About the Defense for this Season?

Dave Aranda returns at defensive coordinator, and he has to replace linebackers Duke Riley and Kendell Beckwith. Devin White played some strong linebacker as a freshman, and Donnie Alexander looks to start in the other position. Their secondary returns as a major strength. While Texas and LSU may not win their respective conferences, they will deliver enough value with respect to their betting lines that they will give bettors some significant winnings throughout the regular season this year. Always check injury reports before locking in bets, but we like the Longhorns and the Tigers to turn some heads this year.
