College Football Betting Guide for Week 6

College Football Betting Guide for Week 6

The San Diego State Aztecs, who went all the way to the title game of March Madness this past season, find their athletic program in an awkward position right now. They had been a Mountain West Conference team since 1999, and they had boosted the conference’s profile and cash flow with that basketball success, and the football team has won 10 or more games five times since 2015, a performance that brought in enough donations for a $300 million stadium, which will open next year. On June 13, the school notified the MWC that they planned to leave in anticipation of an invitation from the Pac-12. However, the Pac-12, which lost USC and UCLA to the Big Ten, does not have a new television deal, and the conference has not issued any invitations. The Aztecs have attempted to cancel their announcement to leave, but the MWC has not accepted their cancellation and did not include the school in its recent revenue distribution. At this writing, it sounds like the conference still expects San Diego State to pay what would be a $16.5 million exit fee. As we look ahead to college football betting picks for the coming college football season, let’s look at some matchups in Week 6.

NCAA Betting News: Complete Betting Guide for Week 6

Nebraska Cornhuskers at Illinois Fighting Illini

When: Friday, October 6 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Memorial Stadium Champaign, IL
TV / Streaming: FS1

The Nebraska program looks set for a rebuild under new head coach Matt Rhule, who turned Temple’s program around and did well with Art Briles’ players at Baylor. He didn’t have success at the NFL level with the Carolina Panthers, but there have been plenty of elite college coaches who didn’t prosper in the pros – starting with none other than Nick Saban. Quarterback Jeff Sims has transferred in from Georgia Tech, and the secondary and linebacker unit are already solid, which makes new DC Tony White’s job easier. On offense, Rhule is all about pounding the ball on the ground and controlling the line of scrimmage, which should make him a fan favorite in Lincoln.

Illinois posted an 8-5 record in 2022, their first winning campaign since 2011, and they won five conference games. The defense saw coordinator Ryan Walters take the head job at Purdue, and the secondary will have a lot of turnover. Luke Altmyer transferred in from Ole Miss to replace Tommy DeVito at quarterback, and tailback Chase Brown has also moved on. This makes three new starting quarterbacks in three years, but the offensive lineman has three starters coming back. Traveling for a Friday night game adds to the challenge for Nebraska, so I’d go with the Illini at home in a game featuring two programs trying to forge new identities.

Oklahoma Sooners vs Texas Longhorns

When: Saturday, October 7, Time TBA
Where: Cotton Bowl, TX
TV / Streaming: ABC

This annual matchup is one of the great rivalry games in all of college football, taking place in Dallas at the original Cotton Bowl. Many times, one team or the other has come in as a heavy favorite, only to take an upset and see their national championship hopes take on water. Both teams are set to head to the SEC in 2024, and both teams have questions to answer after subpar 2022 campaigns. The Sooners went 6-7 last year in Brent Venables’ first season coaching, and quarterback Dillon Gabriel is back to guide an offense that scored more than 30 points per game last year. Tailbacks Jovantae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk both return. The real questions come on defense, as Venables came to Norman with a well-earned reputation as a defensive guru after his time molding the defense that sent Clemson to multiple College Football Playoff appearances. Last year, the defense could not stop the run consistently and gave up over 30 points per game. The team did make some additions on defense through the transfer portal, and a Sooner team that lost five games by no more than one score should have better fortune this time around.

This isn’t the first time in recent years that Texas has been the preseason favorite to win the Big 12, but could this be the first time the Longhorns actually live up to expectations in over a decade? The team has 15 starters back, including signal-caller Quinn Ewers, and on paper, the O-line and wide receiver group are elite nationally. We’ll know more about Texas after their early trip to Alabama, but this matchup with Oklahoma could easily turn into a track meet, with two terrific quarterbacks and skill groups ready to square off. The “over” is the best bet here, but I would also take Texas to cover.
