College Football Betting Guide for Week 7

College Football Betting Guide for Week 7

College football recruiting is becoming more and more competitive with each passing year, and with the gap between the SEC-Big Ten axis and the Big 12-ACC-Pac-12 group widening – let alone the gap between the conferences formerly known as the Power 5 and the Group of 5 – we’re seeing more and more commitments to the recruiting classes of 2025 and 2026. USC is one program looking to lock down talent ahead of the Trojans’ move to the Big Ten, as we saw when cornerback coach gave an offer in the 2026 class to Joshua Holland, a hometown D-back from St. John Bosco after the school’s college showcase. Holland is entering the tenth grade – and wasn’t all that interested in USC before the offer – but the Trojans’ interest has only led to offers from other schools. The Trojans face Notre Dame under the watchful eye of Touchdown Jesus in Week 7, just one of the college football betting matchups that week that we are previewing for you.

USC Trojans at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

When: Saturday, October 14 at 7:30 pm ET
Where: Notre Dame Stadium, Notre Dame, IN
TV / Streaming: NBC

USC made some major strides in 2023, thanks to the arrival of Lincoln Riley’s offense and Caleb Williams’ talent as the signal-caller won the Heisman Trophy and led the Trojans to the Cotton Bowl. The offense was elite, but the defense let the team down in multiple key games, including both losses to Utah, one in the Pac-12 Championship, and the 46-45 loss to AAC champs Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. The defense added D-lineman Bear Alexander (Georgia) and linebacker Mason Cobb (Oklahoma State) through the transfer portal, so that side of the ball should be improved.

Notre Dame’s offense will be much better in 2023 as Sam Hartman transferred in from Wake Forest to take over the quarterback job. The Fighting Irish also have a deep, talented pool at tailback and one of the best O-lines in the country. The team lost some talent at safety and defensive end, and replacing those losses will be a must for the Irish to have a chance at national contention this season. Can Hartman outduel Caleb Williams? This game will come down to the better rebuild on defense. Right now, I’m looking at Notre Dame to cover.

Syracuse Orange at Florida State Seminoles

When: Saturday, October 14 at TBA
Where: Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, FL
TV / Streaming: TBA

Dino Baber has guided the Orange to two winning seasons now after the 7-6 campaign in 2022. Quarterback Garrett Shrader is back, but the offensive line has lost three starters from 2022 and top tailback Sean Tucker has also left. The defense has a new coordinator, the experienced Rocky Long, but the secondary lost some key contributors, and run defense was a problem for Syracuse last year.

Mike Norvell seems to have the Seminoles on the rise as Florida State posted a 10-3 record in 2022. Quarterback Jordan Travis returns to lead a white-hot offense, and most of the defensive starters are also back. We will know more about Florida State’s progress after their opener against LSU in Orlando, but Travis will have 6’7” Johnny Wilson as his top target along with Keon Coleman, who transferred in from Michigan State. I’m liking Florida State to win and cover here.

Iowa Hawkeyes at Wisconsin Badgers

When: Saturday, October 14 or 23 at TBA
Where: Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, WI
TV / Streaming: TBA

Iowa still has an elite defense so if they can get significantly above their offensive output last year (18.7 points per game in conference play), a Big Ten West title is definitely in rhe realm of possibility – and this trip to Wisconsin will play a major role in that outcome. The Hawkeyes added quarterback Cade McNamara through the transfer portal, which also brought the team help on the O-line and at wide receiver.

Wisconsin has a new head coach, as Luke Fickell was rewarded for his success at Cincinnati with the head job at this venerable Big Ten institution. Phil Longo is the playcaller, and with his Air Raid offense, the Badgers should get away from their slow, grinding approach to moving the ball. Tailback Braelon Allen will still give the offense plenty of ground credibility. The defense has eight starters returning and will help the Badgers greatly in their own contention for the division title. I like Wisconsin to win and cover.
