Week 6 College Football Expert Picks: AP Top 25 Betting Analysis – 2024 Season

Betting AP Top 25 Teams | Just in case you were wondering if Arch Manning would falter when he got the Week 5 start for the Texas Longhorns, you would have been incorrect.

It’s true that the Longhorns’ offense didn’t fare all that well with the new voice early against Mississippi State, but Manning figured things out and threw for a career-best 335 yards, accounting for three touchdowns.

Quinn Ewers’ absence doesn’t harm Texas offense; Stanquan Clark shines for Louisville defense. Despite loss to Notre Dame, Clark impresses with a 96.4 PFF grade for run defense.

He posted seven tackles, a pair of pressures as well as a forced fumble. As far as the Duke Blue Devils are concerned, their O-line might be their best unit. Duke fell behind North Carolina, 20-0, and then came back to win by one.

Their offensive line had a 93.7 PFF grade for run-blocking, which led all of the Power 4 teams last week.

Now let’s take a look at the latest AP Top 25 rankings going into Week 6, as well as our insights about some contenders that may influence your sports betting choices.

Betting AP Top 25 Teams in the Week 6 of the College Football

Alabama Crimson Tide

Is Alabama really the top team in the nation, or can Georgia’s Kirby Smart really just not game plan for the Crimson Tide? Even with Nick Saban watching the game from a booth, ensconced in retirement, and with Kalen DeBoer now leading the Tide, things looked much the same for the Bulldogs. Alabama rolled up a 28-0 lead during the first half. Georgia would respond but ended up losing, 41-34.

Two true freshmen helped the Tide get their win, including wide receiver Ryan Williams, who caught the winning score on a 75-yard catch and spin that sprung him to the end zone. Cornerback Zabien Brown stepped in front of a Carson Beck pass to end the Bulldogs’ last scoring drive. DeBoer now has a 13-2 record in his last 15 contests against teams ranked in the top 25. He’s only lost three games during his career coaching in the Power 4.

Georgia Bulldogs

As far as the Bulldogs are concerned, Smart said after the game that he didn’t have his team “ready to play,” a damning admission given that Georgia had a bye week before this matchup to get ready for the Tide. Things don’t get much easier for Georgia after that – they have road games against Texas and Ole Miss, and they also have Tennessee, but at home. If you’re still bullish on Georgia, just remember that as long as they make it into the 12-team bracket, they have a shot at a title, and they just might get to a final without having to see Alabama.

Betting AP Top 25 Teams Texas Longhorns

If I told you that Texas would lose two fumbles, commit eight offensive penalties and drop a wide-open scoring pass against Mississippi State, you might think that they had slogged through an unnecessarily close win – or even lost. However, the Longhorns won – by 22. They picked up 522 yards of total offense along the way. Week 6 is their bye, which they will use to prepare for their yearly meeting in Dallas with the Oklahoma Sooners. So far, though, they have a 5-0 record; in their three tomato-can nonconference games, they posted a +149 point differential, and that’s not counting their 31-12 win at Michigan.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Where does Ohio State belong in this discussion of elite teams? They did run roughshod over Michigan State, rolling to a 38-7 win. Jeremiah Smith already has five touchdown catches on the year, just three away from Cris Carter’s record, which dates back to 1984. Smith got another touchdown on the ground last week on a reverse. Ohio State has sent four wide receivers to the NFL draft and seen them go in the first round.

Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee sat at home on their bye week while Georgia and Alabama were trading haymakers. Kentucky was busy upsetting Ole Mills, while Texas had to expend extra energy to send Mississippi State packing. Tennessee hasn’t really played any one yet, so that 216-28 scoring advantage isn’t really all that significant. Their trip to Arkansas will tell us something about what they have. They follow that with a visit from Florida and a visit from Alabama. For now, though, the Volunteer defense is tops in fewest yards and points per drive among FBS schools, while the offense has learned that it can stack up points in a hurry.

Betting AP Top 25 Teams Miami Hurricanes

What about Miami? Are the Hurricanes a legit national championship contender, or did that win over Virginia Tech not only show us that the officials seem to want Miami to win but also that the Hurricanes’ defense is suspicious? The replay of that last-second Hail Mary has sparked more questions than it has answered, and if you’re not a Miami fan, your first complaint might be that the refereeing crew. This is a team that can deal with adversity, and more challenges lie ahead.

^

Oregon Ducks

Oregon has definitely stumbled out of the gate this year. They did beat UCLA, 34-13, last week, but that score did not reflect the tensions in that game as Oregon started slow and seemed to take forever to wake up. Dillon Gabriel threw a pick-six that gave the Bruins a sense of optimism that they did not deserve. One major question coming out of that game is how Oregon will handle elite Big Ten teams – because UCLA is not elite at this point. Oregon did pick up more than 400 yards of offense while permitting fewer than 200 yards with their defense, and that combination can do some damage in the Big Ten.

Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State faced their first challenge of 2024 and met it, grinding the will of the Fighting Illini down in a 21-7 triumph. Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton ran for a combined 196 yards and two scores, averaging 5.8 yards per attempt. Penalties were a problem for the Nittany Lions, including an illegal block in the back that took a pick-six off the board. Kicker Sander Sahaydak also missed two attempts from just 40 yards away, and Penn State also got stopped on a fourth-and-3 in the red zone. Interestingly, they are the only FBS school that has started four seasons in a row with a 4-0 record.

Michigan Wolverines & Minnesota Golden Gophers

If you’re wondering if Michigan is really a top-ten team (or if Minnesota really doesn’t deserve to be in the AP Top 25), those questions didn’t go away after the Wolverines only beat Minnesota by a touchdown last week. Alex Orji only threw for 86 yards and had a pick to go along with a touchdown pass.

Kalel Mullings did run for 111 yards and two scores, but the unit as a whole had problems. The Wolverines lost the yardage game in consecutive wins for the first time in 19 years – Minnesota scored 21 points in the last 14:01 of last week’s game to make what had been a laugher a nail-biter. Now that the tough Big Ten matchups are coming, Michigan needs to tighten up the defense.
