College Football Betting: Can Unbeaten Teams Go All the Way?

College Football Betting: Can Unbeaten Teams Go All the Way?

The consolidation of College Football Betting into four power conferences and five “other” conferences in the Football Bowl Subdivision means that, in the power conferences, there will be more powerhouses facing off in league play.

It also means, though, that getting a 12-0 regular-season record will be harder than ever.

Getting that 13th win in a conference title game makes it even harder, as the Georgia Bulldogs learned last year after a perfect regular season still left them out of the College Football Playoff when they lost the SEC Championship.

With a 12-team playoff, both Georgia and Alabama would still have advanced to the national championship bracket.

College Football Betting Analysis: Unbeaten Teams – How Far Will They Go?

Let’s take a look at which teams have the best sports betting chances of running the table and finishing 12-0 as you think about the coming college football season.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

I know, I know. The Irish tantalize us each year before not just losing a game but losing several.

Their deal with the ACC means that they play several games in that conference while remaining independent.

They also have an annual date with USC, and this year they open at Texas A&M.

The Aggies aren’t a national powerhouse by any means, but they are in the AP Top 25, and Kyle Field is a notoriously difficult place to go in and win.

The Irish also play Florida State. Quarterback Riley Leonard is a solid talent, but injuries took a toll on this roster last year, so health is a priority.

Oregon Ducks

How good is Dillon Gabriel? He put up big numbers at UCF, but it’s not like defenses in the AAC are as good as what he will see in the Pac-12.

He played one season at Oklahoma, leading the Sooners to a win over Texas, but ultimately faltering down the stretch.

Now he will start in Oregon as the Ducks enter the Big Ten. He will face an angry Oregon State team on the road.

The Ducks also play at Michigan and at Wisconsin. At home? They see Ohio State and Washington.

Yes, Oregon has an explosive offense, and head coach Dan Lanning was the architect of Georgia’s ironclad defense, but an unbeaten season seems like a tall order here.

Georgia Bulldogs

Since the start of the 2020 season, Georgia has lost exactly four games. Over the last three seasons, they have gone 42-2.

Quarterback Carson Beck is back from the 2023 team, and let’s remember the destruction they rained down on Florida State after they got left out of the national championship game.

The only more impressive show they’ve put on in the postseason came the year before, when they absolutely torched TCU in the national championship game, 65-7.

This time around, they have some big dates on the schedule: Clemson in non-conference play, along with SEC dates against Alabama, Texas, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

Ohio State Buckeyes

The last three seasons have seen Ohio State fall to Michigan in the regular-season finale.

Now that Jim Harbaugh has run to the NFL, just in time to avoid a four-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA for his recruiting violations, Ohio State has a clearer path to a Big Ten championship.

But can they run the table in terms of wins? They play at Oregon and at Penn State, and they see Michigan again at home.

Texas Longhorns

Last year’s team won the Big 12 and went to the national semifinals despite a midseason loss to Oklahoma.

They lost a lot of talent, but the transfer portal brought weapons on both sides of the ball.

They play at Michigan in Week 2, and in addition to their annual rivalry game with Oklahoma, they play Georgia.

James Madison Dukes

We go outside the Power 4 to check out this Sun Belt team. They went 11-1 last year before losing their bowl game to Boise State.

They have a new head coach in Bob Chesney, who made Holy Cross a powerhouse in the FCS.

Their schedule is very manageable, with the biggest challenge coming in non-conference play at North Carolina.
