College Football Betting for Week 3: Sure Losers

College Football Betting for Week 3: Sure Losers

Written by on September 12, 2022

It only took a few hours for the Texas A&M Aggies to become the favorites to win the SEC West…and then to see their stock plummet. The Texas Longhorns looked like they were going to pull off a huge upset at home over the Alabama Crimson Tide, but then Bryce Young pulled off a Houdini-esque scramble to escape a sack and extend the game-winning drive for the nation’s top-ranked team. Then the Aggies took on Appalachian State at home, and the Mountaineers, who could not keep N.C. State off the board last week, shut down the Aggie offense and pulled off a mammoth upset. Let’s take a look at some sure online betting picks for Week 3 on the college football gridiron.

NCAA News: College Football Week 3 Sure Losers

Michigan State Spartans (+2) at Washington Huskies (7:30 pm ET, ESPN)

Both of these teams will enter Husky Stadium as unbeaten programs looking to move to 3-0. The Spartans have gotten to play a couple of cupcakes, beating Western Michigan and Akron in their first two games. Washington has not been really tested either, beating Kent State and Portland State to start the season. Michigan State has lost its last three contests against Pac-12 opposition, but they have also won four of their last six games on the road. Payton Thorne has been serviceable at quarterback, completing 57.7 percent of his passes, but he has three interceptions to go along with his four touchdown passes. Jalen Berger leads the running game with 227 yards and four scores. The defense has been stout, permitting just 6.5 points per game. Angelo Grose is the top tackler with 18, and Jacoby Windmon has 5.5 sacks after two games.

Washington has gone just 4-4 in their last eight games at Husky Stadium. Michael Penix Jr has put up solid numbers after transferring in, throwing six touchdown passes with just one pick, completing 69.7 percent of his attempts. Gilead Jackson and Jalen McMillan have three touchdown catches between them. Wayne Taulapapa is the top tailback with 151 yards and a pair of scores. The Washington defense has permitted just 13 points per game, with Alonzo Tuputala tops on the team with a dozen tackles. Asa Turner has already picked off two passes this season. Michigan State has covered in four straight games, while Washington has not covered in four straight against Big Ten teams. I have more respect for Big 12 teams when it comes to taking over games than I do for Pac-12 programs, so I like Michigan State to cover.

SMU Mustangs (+2) at Maryland Terrapins (7:30 pm ET)

The SMU Mustangs have gotten off to a solid start in 2022, although their opposition so far has just been North Texas and Lamar. In both of those games, the Mustangs put up at least 45 points, with Tanner Mordecai putting up seven touchdown passes with just one interception in the wins. Rashee Rice has 298 passing yards and three touchdown catches in the two wins.

Maryland is also looking for its first game against tougher competition, as the Terrapins downed Buffalo, 31-10, in Week 1, and routed Charlotte last week, 56-21. Taulia Tagovailoa has four touchdown passes and two interceptions, but his accuracy was elite against Charlotte as he went 27 of 31 on the day. SMU has covered in six of their last eight non-conference games, but just once in their last five games away from Dallas. Maryland has covered in five of their last six non-conference games but just 16 times in their last 53 games against teams with winning records. SMU is looking to make its case for inclusion in the coming rounds of Power Five conference expansion, and beating a Big Ten team on the road would certainly be a statement. They have the offensive talent to hang with Maryland and snag a late win. SMU to cover.
