2017 Big 12 Championship Odds & Preview: TCU vs. Oklahoma

Written by on November 29, 2017

Saturday’s Big 12 Championship features a rematch between TCU and Oklahoma. The Big 12 boasts that their round-robin format (all teams in the conference play each other once — there are no divisions) produces a true champion, but in order to give their champion an additional quality win, they feature the top two teams in terms of winning percentage in conference play in their title game. The two teams met on November 11, with Oklahoma rolling to a 38-10 at halftime and then winning, 38-20, in a game that was not nearly as close as that score indicated. The Sooners have won 12 of the 17 meetings between the two teams, including the last three. Can the Horned Frogs get revenge on Saturday, or will the Sooners stamp their playoff ticket with a conference title? Check out our college football lines preview of this title tilt.

Why should you bet on the Horned Frogs?

TCU struggled early against Baylor a week ago — a Baylor team that has only beaten Kansas this year and has lost to Liberty and Texas-San Antonio. The Horned Frogs led, 21-19, at halftime before pulling away for a 45-22 win. TCU did force three turnovers, showing that vaunted defense that has helped them produce a two-loss season. They held Baylor to 14 first downs and won the time of possession battle by five minutes. On offense, the Frogs will have Kenny Hill back at starting quarterback; he missed the Texas Tech game with an injury. Should he go down again, the Frogs have Shawn Robinson at the backup position, and he played well in the win over Texas Tech. TCU scores 34.5 points per game, 28th among FBS teams. However, the real story is the fact that they only permit 15.7 points per game, good for eighth among FBS programs. Tailbacks Darius Anderson and Kyle Hicks give TCU a solid tandem, and if Oklahoma shows some of their defensive inattention, Hill can find Desmon White, John Diarse, KaVonatae Turpin or Jalen Reagor down the field.

Why should you put your money on the Sooners?

Oklahoma permitted 31 points against West Virginia last week, but they scored 59 in delivering a rout. A win would give them a spot in the College Football Playoff, and the fact that a win would not do the same thing for TCU (at least not automatically) should mean that the Sooners have more motivation than the Horned Frogs. Their offense rolled up 646 yards against West Virginia and amassed 27 first downs. They throw the ball for 377.8 yards per game (second in the nation) and they score 45.3 points per game (third in the nation). Baker Mayfield has thrown 37 touchdown passes — and just five interceptions. What about defense? Yes, they did give up 41 points to Baylor earlier this season. However, they have settled down on defense and average 25.3 points permitted per contest. That only ranks 57th in the nation, but the Sooners have shown they can be opportunistic on defense, as they had two takeaways against West Virginia and also shut down the Ohio State offense back in Week Two. TCU’s offense isn’t anything to sneeze at — and the Sooners held them to 10 points in the first half, relaxing only when the game was out of reach.

Expert Big 12 Championship Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like what TCU’s defense brings, and I am certain that they will have made adjustments that will keep the game from turning into an early rout like the November 11 meeting. However, I don’t think that TCU can keep up with the Oklahoma scoring machine. I predict a final score of Oklahoma 31, TCU 20.
