Is Clemson a safe bet in Week 4 of College Football?

Boston College at Clemson Betting Preview & NCAAF Odds for Week 4

Written by on September 21, 2017

September is not about to get any easier for the Boston College Eagles. They took a 49-20 beating at home from Notre Dame last week, and now they head down the coast to take on the second-ranked Clemson Tigers on the road in an ACC showdown. Last week, Clemson went to then-#14 Louisville and delivered a 47-21 rout. Clemson has won the last six meetings in this series, including a 56-10 thrashing up in Boston last year. Let’s take a look at this college football betting matchup to help you make the right pick on your wager in the NCAAF odds.

Why should you bet on the Eagles?

Boston College struggled mightily on defense last week, as they permitted the Fighting Irish to run for more than 500 yards and gain a total of 611 yards on the day. However, BC did win the time of possession battle — by about a minute — which suggests that they can move the ball and chew up some clock, and perhaps even frustrate Clemson with some sustained drives. The problem was that the Eagles turned the ball over three times, which put the ball back in the hands of Notre Dame. The Eagles did lead the game 10-7 at one point, only to see the Irish go on a 42-10 run for the rest of the game. So can BC cover? Well, remember that Clemson overlooked Pittsburgh last year and took a bad loss at home. It didn’t end up derailing their College Football Playoff chances, but Clemson has pulled this kind of slip before. I don’t think that the Eagles have a chance to win, but they do have a trio of talented wide receivers in Michael Walker, Charlie Callinan and Jeff Smith, so they can spread the ball around if quarterback Anthony Brown has time. So they could sustain enough drives to keep Clemson from building that kind of lead.

Why should you put your money on the Tigers?

Last week, Clemson went on the road and beat a top-15 team by 26 points. The first half was comparatively slow, as Clemson only led 19-7 at the intermission. However, they poured on the offense after halftime, outgaining Louisville 613-433. They are winning games by an average of 29 points per contest, and the defense got into the scoring as well, taking an interception to the house. Kelly Bryant has stepped nicely into the quarterback position after the departure of Deshaun Watson to the NFL. He has already thrown for 733 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while running for 162 more yards and scoring five more times with his feet. Travis Etienne, Tavien Feaster and C.J. Fuller represent a trio of talented running backs, so this is an offense that can run right over you. As we saw last week, BC struggles with stopping the run, so this could turn into a long game for them in a hurry. Is Clemson a safe bet in Week 4 of College Football? The Clemson defense has been even more impressive than their offense. They held Auburn to just six points two weeks ago, and then they shut down Lamar Jackson of Louisville — the defending Heisman Trophy winner. BC could have a hard time amassing first downs, let alone moving the ball up and down the field. Clemson seems like a team that is even more focused than they were last year — if that’s possible.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Part of me is a little wary about Clemson falling into a trap here after knocking off Auburn and Louisville in consecutive impressive wins. That line, to me, is awfully big, and it would just take a fluke touchdown late by BC to keep the Tigers from covering. I do like the “over” here, because I think Clemson will hit 40 or 45 by themselves, but I’m not quite sure about that five-touchdown line. I predict a final score of Clemson 52, BC 17
