College football bowl season has long been an unpredictable time for NCAAF betting enthusiasts. Mid-major teams get shots at power conference opponents who are less than excited about their bowl destinations, except for the chance to travel away from school. Head coaches at some schools have already left, leaving their assistants, or a new skeleton staff, to coach their team through the bowl. Now that the transfer portal is part of the sport, rosters are left desolate after the end of the regular season in many cases. Even Ohio State’s starting quarterback, Kyle McCord, has already moved on, with Syracuse as a likely destination, even though the Buckeyes will play on New Year’s Day in the Cotton Bowl without him. With all this in mind, let’s look at some of the Bowl Games Odds that are reliable picks.
2023/24 Bowl Games Odds: Which Games Are Sure Winners?
Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl: UTSA Roadrunners vs Marshall Thundering Herd
When: Tuesday, December 19
NCAAF Odds: UTSA -400 vs Marshall +300 | UTSA -10 / O/U 53.5
Quarterback Frank Harris completes his seventh year of eligibility for the Roadrunners, who still have yet to win a bowl game. Harris has put up some numbers in his career, throwing for 11,862 yards and 92 touchdowns and running for 2,145 yards and 28 more scores. He has won 39 games but also taken two redshirts and torn two ACLs. Marshall has more of a balanced offense, but they don’t have the experience that UTSA has. They did beat UTSA the last time they met, though, in a 23-0 spanking in 2018, and they have won two of three overall meetings, but the UTSA program has improved dramatically since 2018. Roadrunners to win and cover.
EasyPost Hawaii Bowl: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers vs San Jose State Spartans
When: Saturday, December 23
NCAAF Odds: Coastal Carolina +270 vs San Jose State -350 | San Jose State -10 / O/U 53.5
San Jose State rolls in on a six-game winning streak, and they have hit at least 35 points in four of their last five games. Sixth-year senior quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, who was a high school backup for Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa, will lead the offense. The transfer portal has drained the Coastal Carolina program, including quarterback Grayson McCall. The Chanticleers have seen games hit at least 52 points in three of their last four games, and the Spartans can score. Spartans to win and cover / take the over.
Wasabi Fenway Bowl: SMU Mustangs vs Boston College Eagles
When: Thursday, December 28
NCAAF Odds: SMU -450 vs Boston College +325 | SMU -11 / O/U 51
SMU posted an 11-2 record, going a perfect 8-0 in AAC play. They went to Tulane to play for the conference championship and won, 26-14, despite giving the Green Wave the ball on the 1-yard line to start the game. Their defense is quick and opportunistic, with a punishing pass rush. Their running game can sustain drives and wear down defenses, and they get takeaways. The passing game will miss starting quarterback Preston Stone, but backup Kevin Jennings, who won a Texas state football title at Dallas South Oak Cliff High School, showed no fear, making key throws of his own. Their reward? A date with 6-6 Boston College. In a lot of cases, I would predict a letdown by the favorite, but the message with the Mustangs has been all about sending a message with SMU headed to the ACC next year. Mustangs to win and cover.
ReliaQuest Bowl: Wisconsin Badgers vs LSU Tigers
When: Monday, January 1
NCAAF Odds: Wisconsin +310 vs LSU -400 | LSU -10.5 / O/U 55.5
Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels has still not committed to play in this New Year’s Day game for LSU. Even so, LSU is still a lot better on both sides of the ball as Wisconsin is in a rebuilding mode under first-year head coach Luke Fickell. His starting tailback, Braelon Allen, is in the transfer portal, and the top backup, Chez Mellusi, will not play due to injury. Even with Allen, the Badgers were 102nd in the nation in scoring. Tigers to win and cover.
