BYU vs. LSU College Football Week 1 Betting Preview & Analysis

Written by on September 1, 2017

Brigham Young University opened the season in Week Zero with a 20-6 home victory over FCS foe Portland State, and now they head east to take on the Tigers of Louisiana State University on Saturday night, in a game that will keynote the return of big-time sports to the Houston area, just days after the receding of the floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey. LSU enters this College Football Week 1 game under new head coach Ed Orgeron; as the interim coach, he led the Tigers to an 8-4 (5-3 SEC) record, including a 29-9 victory over Louisville in the Citrus Bowl. BYU and LSU have never met in football before, but LSU is favored in the NCAAF lines to beat BYU.

Why should you bet on the Cougars?

BYU did beat Portland State by two touchdowns, but the point spread was 35. Tanner Mangum did go 16 for 27 for 194 yards and a score — and Squally Canada rumbled for 98 yards and a score. However, the Cougars only won the time of possession battle by 42 seconds, and they lost the first-down battle by one. This tells us that, at least in the opener, BYU featured a plodding offense that had a hard time doing much damage against an FCS opponent. While Portland State only put up six points, the fact that they held the ball for almost half the game suggests that they were able to pick up yards when they needed them in the middle of the field but then had some miscues hit them late in drives that kept them out of the end zone. If BYU can’t do a better job on defense against LSU, the Tigers have the talent to turn their offense up to a much higher level than what Portland State can offer. This could lead to a big rout by the Tigers — assuming that their own passing game can take off.

Why should you put your money on the Tigers?

LSU needs to come out of the gate with more fire than they did a year ago; they opened 2-2 in 2016 and then went on an eight-game winning streak to close out the regular season. Leonard Fournette may be in the NFL these days — and Ed Orgeron has a challenge on his hands as he succeeds the legendary Les Miles — but Derrius Guice is ready to pick up the starting tailback role and run with it. Is LSU a safe bet in College Football Week 1?

What about that passing game?

Only one player — D.J. Clark — who caught more than ten passes last year is returning to that LSU roster this season.’ But who will throw the ball for LSU? Danny Etling (2,123 yards, 11 touchdowns, 5 INT) comes back for his final season — and he needs to elevate his game for the Tigers to climb into that SEC West conversation. The Tigers really don’t have another alternative even at Etling’s level, so he’s going to have to execute if LSU has any designs on the College Football Playoff this year. LSU does have some new pieces to plug in offense, as last year the team was relatively weak due to its run-centered orientation. However, against BYU, LSU has all of the offensive muscle that it needs to get by BYU.

Expert College Football Week 1 Pick and Final Score Prediction

I am curious to see what LSU will look like now that Les Miles is out of town. BYU often brings an enigmatic challenge to their non-conference foes early in the season, but based on the way that they played Portland State, I don’t see them hanging with LSU, particularly in the shadow of the bayous. This game should be crammed full of LSU fans and Houstonians who are just happy to have the game in town and to have their belongings above water. I predict a final score of LSU 31, BYU 16.
