The end to another college football season often means watching a national championship game involving Alabama, and this year is no exception. In the last 12 seasons, Alabama has appeared in the championship game eight times, winning six titles, including last year, when they demolished Ohio State, 52-24. The Crimson Tide (13-1) meet the Georgia Bulldogs (13-1) for this year’s national title on Monday night in Indianapolis. The Tide have a chance to win their first back-to-back national championships since 2011 and 2012, when they knocked off LSU and Notre Dame, respectively. The Crimson Tide come in as 2 ½-point underdogs, as Georgia’s talent has outweighed the 17-point win that Alabama posted over Georgia in the SEC Championship.

Why should you bet on the Crimson Tide?
Alabama has dominated games on both sides of the ball all season long. They are fourth in the nation in scoring (41.1 points per game), fifth in total offense (494.6 yards) and eighth in passing offense (336 yards). Bryce Young threw for 4,503 yards (third in the nation) and 46 touchdown passes (second). With that type of offensive prowess, the Tide will be hard for anyone to slow down, even a dominant defense like Georgia.
On defense, the Tide permitted 20.2 points per game, 20th in the nation. They are eighth in yards permitted per game (306.2) and fourth in rushing defense (82.8). They posted 52 sacks on the season, led by linebacker Will Anderson Jr, who had 17 ½ all by himself. There is also the fact that Georgia’s coach, Kirby Smart, was once a Nick Saban protege and has never figured out how to beat his mentor. This includes an overtime loss to Alabama in the national championship four years ago, when Georgia blew a halftime lead and gave up a schoolyard-type heave by Tua Tagovailoa to give the Tide the title.
Why should you put your money on the Bulldogs?
Georgia permitted 6.9 points per game during the regular season – and then watched Alabama hang 41 points on them in the SEC Championship. The Bulldogs still lead the nation with 9.6 points permitted per game and held Michigan to 11 in a 23-point win in the Orange Bowl, and so based on the numbers, you have to think that Georgia’s defense will put together a better effort this time around. Specifically, their front seven has to do a better job getting pressure on Bryce Young, and their secondary has to figure out how to cover Alabama’s receivers, a job that gets somewhat easier as the Tide will not have John Metchie III.
Georgia’s offense was serviceable against Alabama, scoring 24 points, but Stetson Bennett threw a pair of interceptions, one of which went for a pick-six. The Georgia offense bounced back against Michigan, putting up 34 on the night. They rank ninth in the country with 39 points per game, and Bennett has been heating up with 10 touchdown passes in his last three games – including three against the Tide in the SEC Championship. With better ball security, the Georgia offense will have a much better chance to hang with Alabama.
Final Score and Betting Prediction
I understand the argument supporting Georgia as the favorite, as you look at their roster and see a team that should be able to beat Alabama. However, there is a long way to go from “should win” to victory, and the ease with which Alabama beat Georgia in the SEC Championship told me that Kirby Smart still does not know how to deal with the Tide. This game should be closer, but the Tide will still win. I predict a final score of Alabama 34, Georgia 27.
