The Buckeyes do get several of their main defensive contributors back this season.
Michigan Wolverines
Michigan did stop Washington in emphatic fashion in the national championship game. However, they come into 2024 without Harbaugh and without quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The O-line needs a rebuild, as does most of the defense. That’s the problem with winning titles – the players all head to the pro ranks.
Texas Longhorns
Texas looks to have Quinn Ewers back at quarterback, but most of his top targets have moved on. Going to the SEC could lead to major setbacks for the Longhorns, but if they can make it to the conference title game, they would have an excellent resume for CFP selection.
Oregon Ducks
Oregon moves to the Big Ten, and their new quarterback is the ageless Dillon Gabriel, who transferred from Oklahoma with yeat another season of eligibility. Gabriel was able to move the ball well against Big 12 opponents, but we’ll see how he fares against the Michigan and Ohio State defenses.
Ole Miss Rebels
Ole Miss kept quarterback Jaxson Dart and picked up some key contributors via the transfer portal. Last year, the only teams that beat Ole Miss were Alabama and Georgia. The Rebels did not recruit nearly as well as the Tide and the Bulldogs did, so it will take some more terrific scheming from Lane Kiffin to get the Rebels into the CFP.
