Clemson at Virginia Tech NCAAF Odds & Expert Betting Prediction for Week 5

Written by on September 27, 2017

The Virginia Tech Hokies enter their home football game against the Clemson Tigers with high hopes on Saturday night, but against the NCAAF Odds. The Hokies took Old Dominion to the woodshed last week, rolling to a 38-0 rout at home. Clemson also won in a rout, taking down Boston College, 34-7, at home. The two teams met a year ago, with Clemson escaping with a 42-35 victory. This college football betting matchup between the nation’s second and twelfth-ranked teams should turn into one of the most closely fought matchups of the weekend.

Why should you consider the Tigers NCAAF Odds?

That final score against Boston College looked like a rout, but things were much closer until the fourth period. Kelly Bryant has looked terrific in taking over the quarterback position from Deshaun Watson this season, but he took a step back against BC, going just 17 for 26 for 140 yards and a pair of interceptions. He was able to get two touchdowns with his feet, running for 106 yards — and it is his rushing that has galvanized the Clemson offense. Travis Etienne picked up 113 yards on nine attempts, giving him 292 yards in three games. The Clemson offense took a while to get going, but once the run started clicking, the game changed in a hurry. The Clemson defense was particularly dominant against Boston College. The Eagles only converted 4 of 16 third downs and gained just 238 yards on the night. If you like Clemson here, you see their defense clamping down on the Virginia Tech attack while the Clemson running game imposes its will on the pace and rhythm of the game.

Why should you put your money on the Hokies NCAAF Odds?

Virginia Tech may have their best answer at quarterback since Michael Vick, as Josh Jackson has looked sharp in each of his team’s four wins. Against Old Dominion, he went 20 for 30 for 298 yards and three scores, with one pick — his only interception of the year so far, against 11 touchdowns overall. The NCAAF Odds are against the Hokies for Week 5. Travon McMillian is the Hokies’ leading rusher, with 162 yards over four games. However, he did not play much against Old Dominion, as Virginia Tech dominated the game primarily through the air. Cam Phillips hauled in seven passes for 106 yards, giving him 523 total receiving yards on the year, with five touchdowns. That whipping of Old Dominion gave the Hokies three consecutive routs. Can they maintain that sort of offensive pressure when Clemson comes to town? Virginia Tech’s defense basically smothered the Old Dominion attack, limiting them to 149 yards of offense and only permitting them to convert two of their 14 third down opportunities. They bring balance on both sides of the ball and will represent one of Clemson’s toughest tests this season, particularly in Blacksburg.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Virginia Tech has historically one of the toughest home fields in all of the ACC. However, in their last five ACC games, they have only covered the spread once. Clemson, in contrast, has covered the spread in five of their last six games overall — and in all four of their last four matchups against teams that come in with a winning record. From a more practical standpoint, Clemson has a running attack that is basically an offensive torrent, as they have three players who have already crossed the 249-yard mark after four games. While Virginia Tech may have been able to rout their last three opponents, none of those teams had anywhere near the talent that Clemson will bring to the field. I don’t see Clemson winning this in a blowout, but I do see them winning and covering. with a 27-13 final score. Score & Pick: Clemson Tigers 27 – Virginia Tech Hokies 13
