College Football Power Rankings after Week 6 of the 2021 Betting Season

Written by on October 11, 2021

This past weekend brought significant chaos to the sport of college football. Cincinnati, a team from the Group of Five, is now ranked third in the nation in both major polls. Arkansas scored 51 points against Ole Miss — and lost. Texas led Oklahoma 28-7 after the first quarter — and lost. Alabama lost at Texas A&M, marking the first time, in 25 tries, that one of Nick Saban’s former assistants beat him. It also marked the first time a #1 team had lost to an unranked team in over a decade.

Let’s take a look at our updated college football power rankings, as you consider your sports betting choices for next week’s action.

NCAA News: CFB Power Rankings after Week 6

#1 Georgia Bulldogs (6-0)

Georgia beat Auburn, 34-10, using backup quarterback Stetson Bennett and freshman receivers Adonai Mitchell and Ladd McConkey as injuries pushed the Bulldogs down the depth chart. Bennett’s numbers did not look like those of a reserve, though, as he went 14 of 20 for 231 yards, a pair of scores and no interceptions. Meanwhile, that Bulldog defense keeps shutting down opposing offenses.

#2 Iowa Hawkeyes (6-0)

Penn State jumped out to an early lead against Iowa, but the Hawkeyes’ defense knocked out quarterback Sean Clifford and ended up snatching four interceptions en route to a comeback win. Iowa now has 16 interceptions, tops in the nation. Punter Tory Taylor forced Penn State to start six drives inside the 20 and four times inside the 12.

#3 Cincinnati Bearcats (4-0)

Cincinnati played on a Friday the week after knocking off Notre Dame, and there was no letdown against Temple, as the Bearcats only permitted a 55-yard field goal and outscored the Owls, 35-0, after halftime. Temple only crossed midfield three times and only averaged 2.8 yards per carry. Quarterback Desmond Ridder threw for three touchdowns, and the team ran for 279 yards and four scores. This sort of balance on offense will make Cincinnati extremely difficult to beat.

#4 Oklahoma Sooners (6-0)

After a dreadful first quarter, including two turnovers, Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler went to the bench in favor of freshman Caleb Williams. That jump-started the offense, which came back from that 21-point deficit and stacked up 662 yards and 55 points on the day. So there is a quarterback controversy in Norman, and that’s trouble at this point in the season. It will be interesting to see how the Sooners move forward.

#5 Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1)

We saw some problems when Alabama barely beat Florida last month. This time around, when the Tide fell behind early, they could not finish the job. They ended up having to attempt 48 passes, and special teams had a disaster, permitting a kickoff return for a score. Alabama had not lost to an unranked team since 2007. Alabama actually came back to lead, 38-31, but then the defense could not stop backup quarterback Zach Calzada on two different scoring drivers, the last of which finished with a game-winning field goal.

#6 Michigan Wolverines (6-0)

Michigan trailed Nebraska at two different points in their game on Saturday. However, a late strip-sack by Brad Hawkins set up the Wolverines for a game-winning field goal to prevail, 32-29. Every team has off games, and winning this one showed that the Wolverines can overcome adversity. Hassan Haskins ran for 123 yards, and quarterback Cade McNamara made clutch plays despite missing his top wideouts.

#7 Michigan State Spartans (6-0)
#8 Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1)
#9 Kentucky Wildcats (6-0)
#10 Penn State Nittany Lions (5-1)
#11 Oregon Ducks (4-1)
#12 Oklahoma State Cowboys (5-0)
#13 Ole Miss Rebels (4-1)
#14 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (6-0)
#15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-1)
#16 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (6-0)
#17 Arkansas Razorbacks (4-2)
#18 Arizona State Sun Devils (5-1)
#19 SMU Mustangs (6-0)
#20 Florida Gators (4-2)
#21 BYU Cougars (5-1)
#23 San Diego State Aztecs (5-0)
#24 Texas A&M Aggies (4-2)
#25 Baylor Bears (5-1)
