Jeff Traylor has transformed this program since coming ahead of the 2020 campaign. In the last three seasons, the Roadrunners have won two Conference USA titles; this season, their first in the American Athletic Conference, saw them go 7-1 in league play, just missing the conference title game that ended up featuring Tulane and SMU. They started 1-3, taking some lumps in non-conference lay, but in their league play, they won seven games in a row and almost made the title game before losing to Tulane in the regular-season finale, turning the ball over five times. They scored at least 34 points in every other conference game, thanks in large part to quarterback Frank Harris, who wound up his seventh and final year of eligibility with 411 passing yards, 112 rushing yards and six touchdowns overall.
Other seniors who have contributed heavily this year include wideout Joshua Cephus, who has caught six or more passes in 11 of 12 games this year, with 1,049 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. The team ranks 39th in the nation in total offense thanks to the contributions of tailback Kevorian Barnes. The team will need to score plenty as they are missing AAC Defensive Player of the Year Trey Moore. He ranked third in the nation in sacks but already left via the transfer portal. Jimmori Robinson, who also posted four sacks in the regular season, will have to pick up the slack in the pass rush.

Marshall rolled out to a 4-0 record to start the season. However, they fell to N.C. State in Week 6, 48-41, in things fell off the table after that as Marshall dropped four consecutive conference games, ending up at 4-5. They bounced back to stop Georgia Southern and Arkansas State, both of whom also made it to bowl games – to clinch bowl eligibility. Marshall has the best bowl game winning percentage in the nation among teams with at least 10 appearances, at 13-5. Last year, they won the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
However, starting quarterback Cam Fancher has already left via the transfer portal. That leaves freshman Cole Pennington to man the offense, but he also started in the team’s wins over Georgia Southern and South Alabama. The son of former NFL quarterback Chad Pennington, he went 49 of 79 for 437 yards in those two games – although he also has six interceptions. Tailback Rasheen Ali ran for 14 touchdowns on the season, breaking the 1,000-yard barrier for the second time. When he runs for more than 130 yards, the Thundering Herd are 3-0.

The offensive and defensive inconsistencies that Marshall shows – as well as their problems with ball security with Pennington at quarterback – will make the difference. I predict a final score of UTSA 34, Marshall 20.
