Georgia at Tennessee College Football Week 5 Preview & Betting Odds

Written by on September 27, 2017

College Football Week 5 features a crucial SEC East matchup as the Georgia Bulldogs heads to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers. The Bulldogs ride in on the wave of a 31-3 home shellacking of Mississippi State (who had thrashed LSU by 30 points the week before). Tennessee struggled to hold off UMass at home last week, just escaping with a 17-13 win. Georgia comes in as NCAAF Odds favorites and the desire to gain revenge for the 34-31 win that Tennessee pulled off at Georgia last year. Why should you bet on the Bulldogs?

Georgia did pull off a road win at Notre Dame, but the shaky nature of that win had some observers wondering how they would manage once conference play opened. They annihilated Mississippi State with a power running game, led by Nick Chubb (371 yards, 6 TD over four games), but they also have a defense that simply manhandles the opposition. Jake Fromm has come on to take the starting quarterback position in the wake of Jacob Eason’s season-ending injury, and Fromm has done well, going 9 for 12 for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win over Mississippi State. The Tennessee offense has not performed nearly as well as the one Mississippi State brought between the hedges last week, which means that Georgia should not have much trouble containing the Volunteer attack in College Football Week 5. Georgia ranks #15 in the nation in yards permitted (269.5), and #8 in the nation in points permitted per game, at 11.5. Given the fact that Tennessee could only manage 17 points at home against UMass, it seems unlikely that they will uncork a powerful offensive game with the Georgia defense coming to town.

Why should you put your money on the Volunteers?

Tennessee went into that matchup with UMass favored winning by 28 points. They were up by eight points at halftime, but they were only able to gain 319 yards of offense on the day. They put up 20 points against a fairly stout Florida defense — but ended up losing on a Hail Mary. Their inability to get much going in the running game has handcuffed them already in several games. This is why they come in ranked #85 in the nation with 381.2 yards per game of offense and #70 in scoring at 30.2 points per contest. The Volunteers have a tough match-up against Georgia in College Football Week 5. Another problem for Tennessee in this College Football Week 5 game comes from their defense. They have had a hard time stopping the running game, and Georgia has three talented tailbacks who can all pound the ball. The Volunteer defense did hold UMass to 281 yards of offense (including 144 rushing yards), but they gave up 703 combined rushing yards in their win over Georgia Tech and their loss to Florida. They rank #118 in the nation in rushing defense (242.2 yards permitted per game). So if you like Tennessee, you think they can shut down Georgia’s running game while also putting up some points against one of the toughest defenses in the SEC.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

Both Georgia and Tennessee have looked to break out from behind Florida in the SEC East and make it to the conference championship game (where they likely await a thrashing from Alabama, but it’s still a division title nonetheless). Tennessee has struggled both in terms of scoring as well as stopping the opposition’s running game, and both of those will turn into real problems against Georgia. One warning — Georgia has gone just 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games after winning straight up. Also, the favorite has failed to cover the spread in each of the last five matchups between these two games. In this case, though, I see Tennessee struggling to stop that Georgia running game while also failing to do much on offense themselves. Score: Georgia 27 – Tennessee 16.
