How to Bet on USC at Washington State NCAAF Odds & Game Pick for Week 5

Written by on September 27, 2017

The USC Trojans tangle with the Washington State Cougars for the first time in three seasons. Both teams bost a 1-0 Pac-12 record and a 4-0 overall record but only can be the favorite, and according to the latest NCAAF Odds, the honor goes to USC. The Trojans knocked off Cal by 10 points on the road last week, while Washington State delivered a 29-point beating of Oregon State. Luke Falk (for Washington State) and Sam Darnold (for USC) are two of the most exciting quarterbacks in college football, so expect plenty of fireworks in this tilt. Why should you bet on the Trojans?

Sam Darnold has a talented arm — against Cal, he went 26 for 38 for 223 yards and a pair of touchdowns. However, his weakness right now is ball security; he also threw an interception against Cal, giving him seven on the young season in just four games. This allowed the Golden Bears to stay with the Trojans and go into the locker room at halftime with the game scored. So while USC did gain 356 yards on the day, their turnovers gave Cal way too much life. Making those mistakes against a tougher contender could easily lead to a different result. The USC defense also has some issues to figure out. They are terrific at generating takeaways — they picked off four Cal passes and recovered two fumbles, and those six takeaways were a huge factor in the 17 unanswered points that USC put up in the second half. However, the Golden Bears were able to gain 416 total yards on the game. If the Trojans hadn’t had those takeaways and those Cal drives had continued, it is likely that the game would have had a very different result. If you like USC in this game, you see them doing a better job of shutting down the Washington State offense than they did against Cal (turnovers excepted) and you also see their offense doing a better job holding onto the ball.

Why should you put your money on the Cougars?

Washington State has looked dominant in their first four games, but the competition they have faced has been far inferior to USC. Their wins have come over Montana State, Boise State, Oregon State and Nevada. Boise State is not playing up to their historical quality standards, but they still pushed the Cougars to overtime. They did show some defensive dominance against Nevada, shutting out the Wolfpack until the last two minutes of the game, and the offense was also firing on all cylinders, as Falk went 36 for 47 for 478 yards and five touchdowns — and no interceptions. The Cougars are against the NCAAF Odds for Week 5.     It is Mike Leach’s offense that will determine how far these Cougars go. Falk has completed 77 percent of his passes on the season, gaining 1,378 yards through the air and throwing 14 touchdown passes against just a single pick. The team averages over 432 yards per game through the air — and just 72 yards per game on the ground — telling you that this is a team that loves to heave the ball down the field. If you like the Cougars in this game, you think that playing in front of a raucous home crowd and unleashing a crazy passing attack will give the Cougars enough momentum to cover the spread against an elite Pac-12 program.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I worry about USC’s defense against the waves of offense coming from Washington State, and the Cougars are certainly due to a big win at home against a major Pac-12 program. Also, the propensity that Darnold has shown for throwing picks at the wrong time is likelier than not to rear its head in this contest. Final Score: Washington State Cougars 38 – USC Trojans 34.
