Why Bet on Kansas?

The Jayhawks are not a good offensive team and neither do they play great defense, but if given decent opportunities, you can be sure that they will cause a handful of problems to you. This was evident when they nearly caught the TCU Horned Frogs napping three weeks ago in a narrow 24-23 loss, and then gave a respectable account of themselves in a 44-20 home loss to Oklahoma State last week. Playing in Norman and against the red-hot Sooners won’t be easy, but QB Montell Cozart, who started vs. Oklahoma State last week in place of Ryan Willis, had a good-enough performance alongside top running back Ke’aun Kinner. That, plus the fact that Kansas’ defense has been playing well in defending the pass (231.14 YPG allowed), should motivate KU for a serviceable showing this weekend.

Why Bet on Oklahoma?

Since losing to Ohio State over a month ago, the Sooners have won four straight games, the last of those being a 66-59 thriller over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Quarterback Baker Mayfield had a star performance in the victory, passing for 545 yards and 7 touchdowns with zero interceptions, including 202 yards and 2 TDs to his top target Dede Westbrook. Meanwhile, the running game was paced by career-day from running back Joe Mixon, who rushed for 263 yards and 2 TDs on 31 carries. But as has been the case for the most part this season, Oklahoma’s defense continued to struggle, allowing TTU quarterback Patrick Mahomes to account for an FBS-record 100 plays (88 passing, 12 rushing) for a whopping 819 total yards and 7 total TDs. We don’t expect the Jayhawks to cause this kind of trouble to Oklahoma (which is 10-SU and 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games overall vs. Kansas), but the Sooners will definitely need to step up defensively, at least for the sake of fine-tuning their D unit in preparation for tougher opponents that they are yet to face in conference play.

My Betting Predictions

In as much as the Sooners have the talent to hand the KU a blowout and cover this game’s spread, it’s hard to trust them to do that, given how weak their defense has been. So rather than take the points, you are better off banking on OU’s offense—that is averaging 50 PPG scoring in its last four straight games—to get into character with a big performance, supported by a decent number of points from KU’s offense (21.71 PPG scoring this season) to take the total OVER 67. Final Score Prediction: Oklahoma 55, Kansas 14 Writer’s NCAA Football Pick: OVER 67
