College Football Game Odds: NC State Wolfpack vs Tennessee Volunteers Expert Analysis & Picks

College Football Game Odds: NC State Wolfpack vs Tennessee Volunteers Expert Analysis & Picks

College Football Game Odds | NC State vs Tennessee | While some big schools struggled to get their offenses out of the gate in Week 1, the Tennessee Volunteers had no such problems.

Behind quarterback Nico Iamaleava, the Vols rolled over the Chattanooga Mocs, 69-3.

The fact that Clemson got rolled by Georgia, 34-3 (yet still held onto the #25 spot in the AP poll), Florida State has slid to 0-2, and LSU was upset by USC in their opener, so the Volunteers are moving up compared to some of the other college football contenders.

They’ve jumped up to #14 in the most current AP poll and #12 in the Coaches’ Poll.

Let’s take a look at Tennessee’s Week 2 game – a neutral-site showdown with the N.C. State Wolfpack.

N.C. State Wolfpack +246

N.C. State finished 9-4 last year (6-2 ACC), trailing Florida State and Louisville in the final conference standings.

They went to the Pop Tarts Bowl where they lost, 28-19, to Kansas State.

The Wolfpack also opened against an FCS school, but their game against the Western Carolina Catamounts was a lot more harrowing as they had to come back from a deficit in the fourth quarter, turning a 21-17 disaster into a 38-21 win with three unanswered touchdowns.

Quarterback Grayson McCall threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, and tailback Jordan Waters picked up 123 yards on 20 carries, scoring twice.

When the Wolfpack are underdogs, they tend to over-perform, going 4-1 SU in their last five games in that situation.

The Vols is 1-3 in their last four games against teams in the AP Top 25, and in their last eight September games against teams in the AP Top 25, they have covered the spread just twice.

Tennessee Volunteers -319

Tennessee entered 2023 with high hopes but ended up just 9-4 (4-4 SEC). They finished third in the SEC East, behind Georgia and Missouri.

They took on Iowa in the Citrus Bowl and delivered a 35-0 thumping. That offensive onslaught continued in Week 1 as the Vols scored in double figures in each period of their blowout.

Iamaleava threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns, and tailback Dylan Sampson led the team with 124 rushing yards and scored three times on his own.

They have an 11-game winning streak in non-conference play, and a 10-1 ATS record in those games. N.C. State has just a 1-8 ATS record against teams outside the ACC.

At neutral sites, N.C. States has a four-game losing streak against non-conference teams.

The Volunteers has gotten off to fast starts in non-conference play, winning the first half in 11 straight and winning the first quarter in 20 of their last 24 non-conference games.

NC State vs Tennessee Final Score and Prediction

With Nico Iamaleava at quarterback, Tennessee has a considerably upgraded offense. I see them moving the ball effectively in both phases against the Wolfpack.

Given the struggles that N.C. State had with Western Carolina, it’s hard to see them gearing up for an SEC contender.

The fact that N.C. State’s offense took a few quarters to get going isn’t as concerning as the 21 points their defense permitted to an FCS school.

I predict a final score of Tennessee 38, N.C. State 20.
