Why should you bet on the Broncos?

This looks like a possible rebuilding year for Boise State — long a powerhouse in their own conference, even pulling off some upsets of Power Five teams. However, when a team from the lowly Sun Belt Conference came to town this week, the Broncos had to struggle to put them away. Their normally white-hot offense looked slow and hesitant, with quarterback Brett Rypien going just 13 for 23 for 160 yards and a pick. The Broncos’ defense has long played second fiddle to that powerhouse offense. The defense stood tall in Boise State’s Week One victory, as they had three takeaways and limited the Trojans to just 215 yards in the game. There’s a lot of youth in this defense, as seven starters either graduated or went to the pros. Given the fact that Rypien threw three picks in that barnburner last year against Washington State, the defense needs to be ready to stand tall again against the Cougars. If you like Boise State, then you think that their offense will fire on all cylinders and their defense will do just enough to deliver a win (or a cover).

Why should you put your money on the Cougars?

Mike Leach’s teams have never been known for their defense, but the Washington State D has been improving slowly over the past couple of years. Nine starters return on defense for the Cougars, and the unit looked solid in limiting Montana to just 143 yards in posting the shutout last week. Rypien did throw for 299 yards in the teams’ matchup last year, so one key for the Washington State defense will be to get the rush to him so he doesn’t have so much time to set up back in the pocket. Is Washington State a safe bet in the NCAAF odds? The Cougar offense scores at video-game pace — and last year, their passing game basically shredded the Broncos. Luke Falk went 55 for 71 for 480 yards, throwing four touchdown passes on the night. Given how many of the Bronco defensive starters are new to the first unit, he should find some openings down the field in this game as well. Last week, he went 33 for 43 for 311 yards and three scores in the win over Montana State. James Williams led all receivers with 13 receptions for 163 yards and all three scores. If the Washington State offense can get clicking again this week, things could get ugly in a hurry for the Broncos.

Expert NCAAF Odds Pick and Final Score Prediction

Boise State has covered the spread in all of their last five meetings with Washington State, and last year’s game was a slugfest for the ages. However, Washington State returns with an improved defense, and they looked much more impressive in their opener than Boise State did. It’s true that the Cougars opened with an FCS opponent, but that’s not all that far below the Sun Belt Conference in terms of overall competitiveness. I see Washington State using this game as a statement that they are ready to contend — not just for a bowl this time, but for the Pac-12 North title, and perhaps even bigger stakes. I predict a final score of Washington State 44, Boise State 27.
