The Oregon Ducks entered the 2024 College Football Playoff with the top seed as undefeated Big Ten champions. However, Ohio State knocked the Ducks around in their showdown en route to a national championship.
Both of these teams lead projected win totals for 2025 (10.5), suggesting that Ducks coach Dan Lanning has shown he can reload through the transfer portal instead of having to wait to rebuild his team. With the talent, coaching stability and scheme, the Ducks should remain one of the top teams in the nation.
In this article, we will break down the Ducks’ schedule and talk about what we can expect to see from them this season – as well as how you should include them in your sports betting.

When does Oregon play?
As a West Coast team, Oregon will generally play in the 3:30 pm Eastern time or prime-time slot when they are at home. When they are on the road, as a Big Ten team, they might well get slotted into that noon Eastern time slot, which is a dangerous time for a West Coast team. We see this trend in NFL games as well, and pro football players are much more accustomed to the rigors of cross-country travel.
Three of the Ducks’ road Big Ten games are in the Eastern time zone, and while Northwestern and Rutgers aren’t the most grueling tests, that date with Penn State could get really interesting even if the Ducks aren’t rubbing their eyes with fatigue as they walk out of the tunnel at Beaver Stadium.
For now, of course, the Ducks’ entire schedule (as far as kickoff times and broadcast networks) is TBA. We’ll keep a close eye on this as the season gets closer. For those road Big Ten games, though, keep those possible factors in mind.
^What are the current Oregon football betting odds? What are their odds to win the national championship?
At this writing, the Ohio State Buckeyes are the favorites to repeat, and most books have them somewhere between +480 and +600 to take the title. After them come the Texas Longhorns (+500 to +650), the Georgia Bulldogs (+600 to +700) and then the Oregon Ducks (+650 to +750).
At this point, you might want to stop and ask what the Bulldogs are doing up here. Remember, they did go to the SEC Championship and beat Texas in overtime. However, without quarterback Carson Beck, they couldn’t make it to the CFP final, losing to Notre Dame. Beck has now transferred to Miami (FL), making the ACC even more interesting than it was a year ago. Can the Bulldogs really reload at quarterback and make another huge run? The SEC may have made their football league even tougher by adding Texas, but what they’ve also done is put just more hurdle in the path of Georgia and Alabama.
The Ducks have added nine players via the transfer portal and will have a new quarterback following Dillon Gabriel’s seven-season college career’s end. They chose not to recruit another quarterback, opting to have sophomores Dante Moore and Austin Novosad compete for the starting role. Returning at linebacker are Devon Jackson and Bryce Boettcher, along with depth players Brayden Platt, Dylan Williams, Kamar Mothudi, and Jerry Mixon. Early high school graduate Gavin Nix joined Eugene for winter workouts. Matayo Uiagalelei, last year’s Big Ten sacks leader, along with Elijah Rushing, Blake Purchase, and Teitum Tuioti, stabilize the edge rusher position.
The transfer portal did yield left tackle Isaiah World out of Nevada. World was ranked #1 among transfers by the 247Sports Composite. He’s 6’8” and 309 pounds, and he has the athleticism to take the place of Josh Conerly, who will play in the NFL this fall. The Ducks had made a priority of finding an athletic left tackle with experience to replace Conerly, giving their freshmen and sophomores more time to prepare for the starting lineup. World was on the field for 456 snaps last year with the Wolfpack and did not allow a single sack. He started 35 straight games over three seasons at Nevada.
Safety Dillon Thieneman transferred from Purdue, ranked #10 by the 247Sports Composite, posted impressive stats with 210 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, six interceptions, nine passes defensed, and two forced fumbles over two seasons. Named national Freshman of the Year in 2023 for his six interceptions as a high safety, he transitioned to the box last year, enhancing his run defense. His presence in Oregon’s defensive backfield could reduce confusion seen against Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

What are the betting trends for Oregon football?
The Ducks are the second betting choice in most books to win the Big Teh title. The Buckeyes (+190 or so on most books) are slightly ahead while the Ducks sit around +240. Penn State (+400 or so) and Michigan (+900 or so) round out the top four. The Wolverines went just 7-5 last year, so this is perhaps a sign that, even after adding USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington, the Big Ten is still more top-heavy than the SEC.
Let’s break down the Ducks’ schedule and make some projections.
^Game 1: vs Montana State
The Bobcats visit Eugene for their first meeting with the Ducks since 1947. This is no ordinary FCS team, as the Bobcats boasted a 15-1 record and reached the FCS national championship game, losing to North Dakota State, with an impressive 8-0 Big Sky record. Their defense is a top-ten scoring unit, and their offense excels in the red zone with a strong running game. If the Ducks underestimate Montana State, it could lead to trouble. However, they are expected to adapt and disrupt the Bobcats’ running game, while the starting quarterback faces a challenging debut. Oregon to win.
^Game 2: vs Oklahoma State
The Cowboys recorded a disappointing 3-9 season last year, marking their first losing record since 2005. Initially viewed as Big 12 contenders after recent championship appearances, they aimed for a spot in the newly expanded 12-team CFP. As they begin 2025 facing Tennessee-Martin, expectations for an easy victory are high. Last year’s struggles stemmed from weak defense and lackluster offense, a rarity under coach Mike Gundy, known for his offensive prowess. This upcoming win could be simpler for the Ducks than against Montana State. Oregon to win.
^Game 3: at Northwestern
Oregon’s first road game will be Northwestern’s second home game after a date with Western Illinois. The Wildcats are not one of the tougher opponents in the Big Ten, and that opener down in New Orleans could be a real trap. A lot of football prognosticators have Northwestern starting 3-2 or 4-1, and the game against Oregon shows up in the loss column in each prediction – there’s just too much talent on both sides of the ball for a Northwestern team that likes to play at a pedestrian pace to outscore. Oregon to win.
^Game 4: vs Oregon State
The Civil War is always an interesting showdown. The Beavers still have the motivation to come into Autzen Stadium and deliver a message to their in-state rival after the Ducks walked away from an historic Pac-12, leaving it as the Pac-2 for 2025. Even so, the Ducks rolled over Oregon State, 49-14, last year, and the Ducks have a ton of talent coming back, so it’s hard to see this game turning out much differently. Oregon to win.
^Game 5: at Penn State
This game took place in Eugene last year, and the Ducks barely escaped with a 45-37 win. The Nittany Lions made the CFP but benefited from a pair of overmatched teams in the first two rounds, rolling over SMU and Boise State before running into a Notre Dame team that plays the grinding game on both sides of the ball even better than the Nittany Lions do. Is this finally going to be James Franklin’s big win over a contender? If this game is at noon Eastern, then I really like his chances. Penn State to win.
^Game 6: vs Indiana Hoosiers
Yes, Indiana did get to the College Football Playoff last year. They got walloped at Notre Dame in the first round, but they have a solid talent foundation returning in 2024. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza transferred in from Cal, but he had a hard time dealing with pressure from ACC defenses. Oregon’s defense will be at least as unfriendly, if not more so. Oregon to win.
^Game 7: at Rutgers
This could be another noon Eastern time start, but this time around, the Ducks will be ready. Rutgers lost tailback Kyle Monangai and his 1,279 rushing yards from a year ago, but quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis is back, along with tailbacks Antwan Raymond and C.J. Campbell, a Florida Atlantic transfer. Their defense against the run was just 16th in the Big Ten – never a good sign. Oregon to win.
^Game 8: vs Wisconsin
Remember when the Cincinnati Bearcats made it from the AAC into the College Football Playoff thanks to the quarterbacking skills of Desmond Ridder? The head coach of that team was Luke Fickell, and he followed up that great season by jumping to Wisconsin. Since then, his record with the Badgers is 13-13, and he’s on the hot seat. Camp Randall will have a new OC in Jeff Grimes and a new quarterback in Maryland transfer Billy Edwards. The Badgers like to play a slow, grinding game, and that just doesn’t work well against the Ducks. Oregon to win.
^Game 9: at Iowa
This might sound a little strange if you know Iowa football, but the offense is actually supposed to put up points this year with Mark Gronowski transferring in at quarterback from South Dakota State. Linebackers Nick Jackson and Jay Higgins and cornerback Jermari Harris have moved on, but if the Hawkeyes can score, they could do some damage. It’s too bad that there’s no longer a Big Ten West for them to win. Oregon to win.
^Game 10: vs Minnesota
The Golden Gophers will “row the boat” with tailback Darius Taylor returning as one of the conference’s top ground gainers. However, the O-line and the wide receiver group lost a lot of players, and quarterback Max Brosmer isn’t around anymore. Oregon to win.
^Game 11: vs USC
Lincoln Riley has a potentially dynamic quarterback in Jayden Maiava, and the wide receiver group is strong. We’ve heard that sentence many times before, with other quarterbacks and wide receivers. However, we also usually hear something like this: the Trojans have holes on both lines and on defense. Oregon to win.
^Game 12: at Washington
This old Pac-12 showdown will mark Rivalry Week for these two teams. They got to a bowl game last year in Jedd Fisch’s first season as head coach. New quarterback Demond Williams looks like a real keeper, but ten of the top 12 tacklers from last year have moved on. I expect a squeaker here in front of a raucous crowd at Husky Stadium, but Dan Lanning system will have his players locked in by now. Oregon to win.
