Here we analyze the NCAAF Over/Under Picks! Florida State head coach Mike Norvell took full responsibility for the Seminoles’ upset loss to Georgia Tech, a shocking result that happened in Dublin, Ireland, in Week Zero.
In his weekly news conference, he said, “It’s sickening that we came up short, and I take total responsibility and ownership for that.”
A particular problem was the run defense, as Georgia Tech rumbled for 190 yards on the ground. Tackling in space and containing the edges were problems as well.
The fact that the Seminoles only had seven offensive possessions was a sign of how the Yellow Jackets were able to mount long drives and keep the ball away.
NCAAF Over/Under Picks from Week 1 – Top Games to Watch and Bet On
As we look at Week One, don’t miss our sports betting thoughts on point totals from these three matchups.
TCU Horned Frogs (-9.5) at Stanford Cardinal (O/U 59.5)
Friday, August 30, 10:30 pm ET
This point total started out at 65.5 before taking a tumble from the open. TCU had a difficult 2023, opening the season with a home loss to Colorado after entering as 20.5-point favorites.
They also lost as a two-touchdown favorite and as a 6.5-point favorite, ending up with a 5-7 record, straight up and against the spread.
They brought in Andy Avalos to revamp the defense, but Stanford has a lot more horsepower on offense than many sports betting enthusiasts might realize.
Neither team has a high-powered running game, which means a reliance on the passing attack that can lead to a lot of points in a short amount of time.
The season opener usually begins with some hiccups on offense, but both of these teams gave up a lot of points in several of their 2024 contests, and I see this turning into a late-night track meet out west.
NCAAF Pick: Take the over.
^South Dakota State Jackrabbits (+9.5) at Oklahoma State Cowboys (O/U 53.5)
Friday, August 30, 2:00 pm ET
The Jackrabbits are the defending FCS National Champions, and they have made the FCS playoffs 12 years in a row, advancing to the title game twice in the last three years.
They steamrolled just about everyone in 2023, with just two of their games decided by single digits.
Oklahoma State is entering Mike Gundy’s 20th campaign as head coach. When he started in 2005, the Cowboys went 4-7, but since then, his teams have made bowls every year.
They went 9-3 last year, including a win in the finale of the Bedlam rivalry with Oklahoma to qualify for the Big 12 Championship.
They had a chance to keep Texas out of the College Football Playoff with a win in the conference title game, but they fell short.
Furthermore, they did bounce back to beat Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl, 31-23.
The Jackrabbits come in with a high-powered offense and a dual-threat quarterback, and they face an Oklahoma State that hasn’t really prioritized defense under Gundy.
NCAAF Pick: Take the over.
^Fresno State Bulldogs (+20.5) at Michigan Wolverines (O/U 47.5)
Friday, August 30, 7:30 pm ET
This is a fairly low point total for a college football game. But what will Michigan have now that Jim Harbaugh has moved onto the NFL?
The Wolverines could well struggle to stay afloat as one of the top four teams in what is now an even bigger Big Ten, with USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington joining the league?
Those four teams bring three potentially elite offenses, and the Wolverines already had Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State and Wisconsin to deal with.
The Wolverines have had to absorb a lot of changes on their roster as well, so this season opener could be a problem.
Fresno State has quarterbacked Mikey Keene, tailback Malik Sherrod and defensive lineman Devo Bridges as their top three stars, and I think both of these teams spend a lot of this game trying to avoid mistakes and sense what the other has going.
NCAAF Pick: Take the under.
