Arizona at #9 USC NCAAF Odds for Week 6

Arizona vs USC: The Arizona Wildcats played an unbeaten, top-ten ranked Pac-12 opponent at home this past weekend – and hung within one score of the Washington Huskies. They get another unbeaten conference foe in the top ten this weekend when they head to Los Angelees to take on the USC Trojans. USC has a ten-game winning streak going against the Wildcats – and three former Arizona starters are now playing for USC thanks to the transfer portal. USC has shown some issues on defense, as we saw when the team went up 34-7 on Colorado and then lost focus, holding onto a 48-41 win.

Why should you bet on the Wildcats?

The Wildcats have played well on the road so far this season. They hung with Mississippi State and only lost in overtime, 31-24. They won at Stanford, 21-20 (although they failed to cover). Against Washington last week, they were 20-point home underdogs but only lost by seven. So far they are 4-1 against the spread. Quarterback Jayden De Laura did not play against Washington, making that result even more impressive. He struggled against Stanford but looked terrific in the first three games. Noah Fifita, his backup, threw for 232 yards against the Huskies and would start if De Laura can’t go.

Tailback Jonah Coleman has been the best of a deep group of ball carriers, averaging 6.9 yards per carry. Michael Wiley has the most carries, averaging 4.4 yards per attempt. The wide receiving group has three players with 200 or more receiving yards on the season, led by the 386 that Tetairoa McMillan has posted. The defense has been serviceable but has really only faced one elite offensive opponent in Washington, who put up 474 yards on the Wildcats. The team is only permitting 19 points per game, but that was helped with their big win over UTEP.

Why should you put your money on the Trojans?

USC opened Pac-12 play with a 56-10 rout of Stanford, and they followed that up by thumping Arizona State. Last week’s win over Colorado was their narrowest margin of victory this season, as they entered as 23-point favorites but only held on to win by seven. Quarterback Caleb Williams threw for 400 yards against the Buffaloes and has at least 280 yards through the air in four straight games. He has an electric 21:1 TD:INT ratio with 1,603 total passing yards. Despite their 3-0 Pac-12 record, though, the Trojans have only covered once – in that win over Stanford.

Tailback MarShawn Lloyd ran for 154 yards against Arizona State and has 433 rushing yards on the season, averaging 8.3 yards per carry. Four different receivers have at least 180 receiving yards, led by Tahj Washington, who had 117 against Colorado and has 395 on the season. USC leads the nation in points per play and has scored 42 or more points in each contest. The defense can be porous, allowing 28 points against Arizona State and 41 against Colorado. They are putting up 53.6 points per game on offense, but as we saw last year, if they can’t get stops, they won’t win the Pac-12.

Arizona vs USC Final Score and Prediction

Arizona’s defense struggles against the pass, allowing 248 yards through the air per game, good for 98th among FBS schools. Caleb Williams should be able to slice and dice this secondary. Despite the fact that USC has had problems on defense, Arizona hasn’t shown the offensive capacity to outscore a juggernaut like the Trojans. I predict a final score of USC 48, Arizona 24.
