NCAAF Odds: #14 Oregon State vs #21 Washington State, Week 4

Written by on September 20, 2023

The Washington State Cougars find themselves ranked #21 in the AP Top 25 after dismantling FCS foe Northern Colorado, 64-21, in Week 3. They stand at 3-0 and have their highest ranking since Week 4 of the 2019 season, when they were briefly ranked 20th. They got votes for as high as #16 but ended up at #21. Now they prepare to welcome the Oregon State Beavers, who are also 3-0 after stopping the San Diego State Aztecs at home last weekend, 26-9. The Beavers head north as 4 ½-point road favorites at this point. We have a NCAAF Odds preview of this showdown between the last two remaining teams in the Pac-12 after this season.

Why should you bet on the Beavers?

Oregon State hasn’t had a lot adversity yet this season, as they started 2023 with a 42-17 whipping of San Jose State down in the Bay Area. In Week 2, UC-Davis came north to face the Beavers, who rolled, 55-7, stacking up 450 total yards of offense, including 269 on the ground, without turning the ball over. In Week 3, quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei overcame some uneven numbers, going just 14 of 30 for 284 yards and a touchdown – but also with two picks. Anthony Gould was the top receiver with three catches for 97 yards, and tailback Damien Martinez had 15 carries for 102 yards, but the defense was the better unit for the Beavers in Week 3.

Here’s a fact that may be somewhat concerning, especially given this line: Oregon State has a fourteen-game losing streak in road contests against teams ranked in the AP Top 25. However, in Pac-12 play, Oregon State has won the first quarter in six straight games and won the first half in five of those six. Getting out to a solid start on the road would give the Beavers the best shot at winning and covering here.

Why should you put your money on the Cougars?

Washington State ran over Colorado State in their season opener, throwing for 466 yards and gaining a total of 556 on the day in a 50-24 laugher. The Cougars picked up a most impressive win in Week 2, stopping Wisconsin, 31-22. The Cougars got 327 passing yards out of Cameron Ward, along with four touchdowns. Lincoln Victor caught six balls for 199 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Dylan Paine rumbled for 81 yards on the ground and found the end zone once.

Washington State has also not done well against ranked opponents recently, going 0-7 in its last seven contests against teams ranked in the AP top 15. However, they are 7-1 ATS in their last eight Pac-12 games, and they have won the first quarter in four straight Pac-12 games (and the first half in three of those). So something has to give in that area between these two teams. Washington State was T21 among FBS schools for points allowed in the first quarter last season, so I like them to get off to a strong start at home.

Final Score and Prediction

This looks like an entertaining game, and both teams can turn on the offense. Given Washington State’s win over Wisconsin, I’m surprised they’re ranked this far behind Oregon State in the AP polls. I think Washington State can pull off the win at home, so I might be tempted to take them on the moneyline as well. I’m definitely taking them to cover and predicting a final score of Washington State 38, Oregon State 34.
