The 12th-ranked Utah Utes have had to play their first two games without starting quarterback Cam Rising – and without star tight end Brant Kuithe. Rising has been rehabbing a torn ACL and could return for the Utes’ Week 3 battle with Weber State. Kuithe has been rehabbing a torn ACL as well – an injury that happened on September 24, 2022. The team also lost junior tailback Micah Bernard for the season thanks to an off-the-field accident before the Utes’ win over Baylor. Ja’Quinden Jackson ran for 129 yards against Baylor, and the team will lean on him again this week. Let’s break down the college football betting matchup between Utah and Weber State to consider your NCAA Football Odds.

Why should you bet on the Wildcats?
Weber State entered the regular season as the 11th-ranked team among FCS programs. The Wildcats have played Utah six times – and have yet to win in the rivalry. They last met on September 2, 2021, with Utah rolling to a 40-17 victory. The closest game in the rivalry came in 2008, when Utah only won by 16. The Wildcats’ offense put up 35.2 points per game last year under new offensive coordinator Mickey Mental, who is now the head coach.
The offensive line has three starters who were All-Big Sky Conference last year: Noah Atagi, Jordan Lutui and Ethan Atagi. Damon Bankston was second on the team in rushing with 709 yards and eight scores on the ground, earning All-Big Sky Honorable Mention honors. Abraham Williams is a scary kick returners, who led all of college football last year with a 37.4 yard per return average – and set an FCS record with four different 100-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns. The defense permitted just 20.4 points per game, and All-Ameicans Maxwell Anderson (CB) and Winston Reid (LB) are back. Anderson led the team with five picks, and Reid led the team with 112 tackles and 12 ½ tackles for loss.

Why should you put your money on the Utes?
Utah started the season with wins over Florida (at home) and Baylor (on the road). In those games, they have scored a combined 44 points, relying on a grinding defense to stay ahead. On offense, the team has used both Nate Johnson and Bryson Barnes at quarterback, but it was Johnson, a redshirt freshman, who led the 15-play, 88-yard drive to tie the game with Baylor with 1:59 left in regulation, and who led the final drive that ended with an 11-yard scoring run by Jaylon Glover with just 17 ticks left.
We still don’t know if Rising will play against Weber State. Given that the Utes were able to beat Florida and Baylor with their backup duo, the team may give Rising one more week of full practice (he has no restrictions on the practice field) to prepare for their Pac-12 opener, a Homecoming visit from UCLA next week. A lot of books are waiting to release odds for this game to see what the Utes will do at the quarterback position as well. Given the dangers that Weber State poses in the return game, this is a contest that could change in a hurry.

Final Score and Prediction
Weber State has a dynamic offense and a terrific return game, but Utah is the back-to-back defending Pac-12 champion. They pulled off mentally tough wins against Florida and Baylor to start the regular season, so I don’t see Weber State sneaking out of Salt Lake City with a win. If you get a point total over 55, though, think about taking the under, as Utah simply doesn’t play at that fast a pace, and they will either have a rusty Rising at quarterback or the ponderous duo of Johnson and Barnes leading the offense.
