SU Picks for NFL Week 16

SU Picks for NFL Week 16

Written by on December 15, 2020

Week 16 mostly features the conference championships in college football but also features some makeup games as teams try to get one more contest in from that regular season slate that had been postponed due to COVID-19. There was one bowl game set for this weekend, featuring SMU and Texas-San Antonio in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl, but contact tracing and COVID-19 cases in the SMU program have led to the game’s cancellation.

We published an article on parlay picks for this weekend yesterday, but here are some interesting straight up picks for your college football betting consideration.

NCAA News: SU Picks for Week 16

Washington State (+310) at Utah (-380) (1:30 pm ET)

Washington State comes in with a 1-2 record, with their most recent schedule game, against Cal, dashed as a result of COVID-19. In three games, Jayden de Laura has thrown four touchdown passes and three picks, good for 682 yards. Deon McIntosh has run for 304 yards and two scores. De Laura’s top targets have been Renard Bell, who leads the team with 27 catches for 294 yards and two scores, and Travell Harris, with 275 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

Utah started the season with two losses but comes in with a two-game winning streak, back at .500. In their last game, they rolled to a 38-21 victory over Colorado. In four games, Jake Bently has 729 passing yards and five touchdowns (as well as five picks). Ty Jordan is the team’s leading tailback with 443 yards and three scores. Bentley’s favorite targets have been Brant Kuithe (175 yards), Bryan Thompson (155 yards) and Britain Covey (130 yards, 2 TD). The Utah defense has Nephi Sewell and Devin Lloyd leading the way with 24 solo tackles apiece, and Sewell also has two interceptions. Washington State has covered in four of the last five meetings with Utah, but they have only covered twice in their last eight road games and once in their last six games overall. Jake Bentley is a shaky starting quarterback, but neither team will be all that excited about a makeup game. This doesn’t offer a lot of value straight up, but I like Utah to keep that streak going. Utah to win.

Arizona State (-275) at Oregon State (+235) (10:30 pm ET)

Arizona State (1-2) got their first win of the season, a 70-7 demolition of Arizona, in their last game. Jayden Daniels has 562 passing yards with four scores and an interception. However, the real strength of the Sun Devils’ offense is the rushing game. Rachaad White (262 yards, 3 TD) and DeaMonte Trayanum (233 yards, 3 TD) have paced the offense. The defense is led by Evan Field, with 28 total tackles (19 solo) and Tyler Johnson, with five sacks.

Oregon State beat Oregon early in the season but has struggled since, putting together a 2-4 record. In their last game, they fell to Stanford, 27-24. Tristan Gebbia and Chance Nolan have both put up uneven numbers in the passing game, while Jemar Jefferson has come on strong with 755 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. The defense is led by Avery Roberts, who has 69 total tackles (39 solo), and Jayden Grant and Nahshon Wright have each swiped a pair of interceptions. Arizona State has covered just once in their last six games against a team with a losing record and just twice in their last nine meetings with Oregon State. Oregon State has covered in three of the last five meetings between the two teams up in Corvallis. Oregon State has the more proven offense, and Chance Nolan played well enough at quarterback against Stanford to earn another shot. Given the long trip that the Sun Devils have to take here, I like Oregon State to win.
