Updated Heisman Trophy Odds to Win this Season

Written by on November 2, 2020

All season long, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been the favorite to win this season’s Heisman Trophy, given to the game’s best player as selected by the Downtown Athletic Club. However, Lawrence will miss at least two games after coming down with COVID-19. Freshman D.J. Uiagalelei came on and played well in Lawrence’s absence against Boston College, but missing games (and potentially having his level of play decreased by the aftereffects) has put Lawrence’s chances in jeopardy.

Let’s look at the latest online betting odds for the Heisman Trophy winner as well as our thoughts on some of the contenders.

NCAA News: Updated Heisman Trophy Odds

Travis Etienne (RB, Clemson) (+2800)

Etienne has run for 606 yards on 103 carries with nine touchdowns on the ground. He’s caught 29 balls for 434 more yards and has two receiving touchdowns. His score to put Clemson ahead of BC on Saturday was the touchdown that saved the Tigers’ unbeaten season. He’ll need to put the offense on his back one more time when Clemson heads to Notre Dame this coming weekend.

Najee Harris (RB, Alabama) (+2500)

Harris has 714 rushing yards on 124 carries, with 14 touchdowns. He has also caught 20 balls for 183 yards. This past Saturday was his first game in 2020 without a touchdown in a 41-0 rout of Mississippi State. Even so, he ran for 119 yards, giving him three 100-yard games on the season. He still leads the SEC in rushing yards and touchdowns.

Zach Wilson (QB, BYU) (+2300)

Wilson has gone 126 of 161 for 2,152 yards with a 19:2 TD:INT ratio, and he has run for seven more touchdowns. He threw a pick against Western Kentucky, but he also accounted for four touchdowns in the Cougars’ 41-10 victory. This weekend’s game against Boise State will be his biggest shot on a national stage.

Devonta Smith (WR, Alabama) (+2000)

Smith has 56 catches for 759 yards and eight touchdowns in 2020. He was not part of the Heisman conversation until he caught four touchdown passes against Mississippi State. Now that the Crimson Tide has lost Jaylen Waddle, Smith becomes the featured receiver, and he had 11 receptions for 203 yards in the win.

Kyle Trask (QB, Florida) (+1800)

Trask set a school record with 18 touchdown passes through four games, against just two interceptions. He has gone 95 of 139 for 1,341 yards in those four contests. If he can lead the Gators to an upset of Georgia, his odds will skyrocket.

Trevor Lawrence (QB, Clemson) (+300)

Lawrence has gone 135 of 191 for 1,833 yards and a 17:2 TD:INT ratio, with four more touchdowns on the ground. If he comes back after the Notre Dame game and is still firing on all cylinders, he will return to his slot as the favorite.

Justin Fields (QB, Ohio State) (+150)

Fields threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns against Penn State. He took a huge shot on a sack in the fourth quarter but still led the Buckeyes to a touchdown on that drive. He has six touchdown passes through two games, without a pick, and has gone 48 of 55 for 594 yards through the air.

Mac Jones (QB, Alabama) (+125)

Jones has gone 139 of 177 for 2,196 yards and a 16:2 TD:INT ratio. He threw four scoring passes against Mississippi State, which has one of the top-ranked secondaries in the nation. Next up for Jones is an LSU defense that has been giving up points in bunches.

Obviously, the balance of the campaign will depend on how Lawrence does in recovering from COVID-19. He was putting up monster numbers before he came down with the virus. As Alabama and Ohio State roll on, if Jones and Fields also keep putting up big numbers, it will be harder to argue Lawrence’s case after missing those games.
