USC Trojans at #6 Oregon NCAAF Odds for Week 11

Could the 8-1 Oregon Ducks make the College Football Playoff? Their only loss came at #5 Washington on October 13, and if they win out, they would likely have beaten Washington in the Pac-12 Championship unless the Huskies collapse. They throttled Cal last week, 63-19, as quarterback Bo Nix went 29 or 38 for 386 yards and four touchdowns. He did have an interception, but that came on a pass that clanked off his receiver’s hands on the first play from scrimmage, and Nix also ran for two touchdowns. Next up is a visit from the defensively challenged USC Trojans – who fired their defensive coordinator after last week’s debacle against Washington, a 52-42 loss. Don’t lock in any NCAAF betting on this game between USC vs Oregon before you read our prediction.

Why should you bet on the USC Trojans?

USC has dropped three of their last four games, but the road has been kinder to the Trojans this season, as they have won three of their last four games away from the Coliseum. Caleb Williams has Heisman-level numbers again this season: 2,958 passing yards, 28 touchdown passes against just four interceptions, and a 69.2% pass completion rate. On the ground, the Trojans run for 158.8 yards per game, led by 766 yards and eight scores from MarShawn Lloyd. USC scores 45.5 points per game, the second-best average among FBS programs.

The problems that the Trojans face come from a refusal to take defense seriously. They allow 34.5 points and 436.3 yards per game. Mason Cobb is the top tackler with 63, and Jamil Muhammad has logged six sacks, but the front seven can’t stop the run, and the secondary can’t stop opposing passing games. Until Lincoln Riley gives defense at least a little bit of attention, the Trojans will keep losing too many games to sniff the College Football Playoff, and this trend won’t change just because USC is going to the Big Ten. If anything, this will worsen the trend, as the Big Ten has a higher quality of competition.

Why should you put your money on the #6 Oregon Ducks?

Since losing to Washington, Oregon has won three in a row by a combined score of 136-49, routing Washington State at home, Utah on the road, and Cal at home. The win at Utah was particularly impressive, even if we remember that the Utes have a backup quarterback running things, because of the Utes’ terrific defense. At Autzen Stadium, the Ducks have a six-game winning streak, and Bo Nix’s numbers are even better than Caleb Williams’: 2,723 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 78.1% pass completion rate. The Ducks also have a terrific ground game, picking up 209.2 yards per game, led by 821 yards and nine scores from Bucky Irving. Oh, and which team is ahead of USC in terms of points per game? That would be Oregon, with 47.4.

The Ducks have also figured out how to play defense, after several years of video game-level offense that couldn’t outscore the opposition. The Ducks permit just 16 points per game, 11th best among FBS programs. Evan Williams has posted 53 tackles to lead the team, and Brandon Dorlus leads the Ducks with four sacks.

USC vs Oregon Final Score and Prediction

While USC has fallen off the table, they do have an elite quarterback and a high-level offense. Can the Ducks win by double digits? I think so. Can they win by more than two touchdowns? That’s going to be trickier. I predict a final score of Oregon 48, USC 38.
