Betting the Top 25: Week 4 College Football Expert Picks, Best Teams’ Analysis – 2024 Season

Written by on September 17, 2024

Betting AP Top 25 Teams | Week 3 of the 2024 college football season saw some huge wins – but it also saw one of the early Heisman Trophy favorites go down to injury.

Quinn Evers, the quarterback at Texas, went down with a noncontact injury, making it necessary to summon Arch Manning from the bench.

Manning accounted for five touchdowns in a laugher over UT-San Antonio, though, and the Longhorns have another tomato can come next week in the form of UL-Monroe.

It will be interesting how long they give Ewers to come back. Even with a backup quarterback at the controls, Texas climbed to #1 in the AP Top 25 polls going into Week 4.

Check out our thoughts on some of the top contenders in the nation as you figure out how to include the top 25 college football teams in your sports betting.

Betting AP Top 25 Teams Entering Week 4 in the College Football

Georgia Bulldogs

Every year, Georgia comes close to disaster in the regular season. Their offense has a hard time getting things going, and the defense has to step up and keep things in line while the offense figures things out. At Kentucky, the Bulldogs almost fell apart, but they found the end zone early in the fourth quarter when Branson Robinson rumbled in from three yards out, and Georgia held on, 13-12. The Georgia running offense picked up just 102 yards on the day, averaging only 3.4 yards per carry. Kentucky was able to sustain drives, picking up 23 first downs. However, Georgia kept Kentucky out of the end zone. We’ll know a lot more about Georgia in two weeks when they play Alabama.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Speaking of Alabama, this team has not lost a step since Nick Saban retired and Kalen DeBoer came down from Washington to lead the program. On Saturday, the Tide simply looked one or two levels better than Wisconsin, rolling to a 42-10 laugher despite the grinding defense that the Badgers are reputed to play. Ryan Williams had a 31-yard run and a 47-yard run in the first half, the first to get the Tide on the scoreboard. Jalen Milroe led the offense to generate 7.3 yards per play. Four different touchdown plays went at least 26 yards, and the Tide did not turn the ball over. On defense, the Tide forced four fumbles (and took away two of them). Those turnovers helped to hide a run defense that wasn’t much better than average. Even so, Alabama’s cleaning things up, and this week their tomato can is South Florida.

Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee had no intention of getting caught up in the MAC upset malaise. Northern Illinois stopped Notre Dame last week, and Toledo shocked Mississippi State this week. When Kent State faced Tennessee, though, there was no upset potential. At the end of the first quarter, Tennessee was up, 37-0. They had gained 283 yards while holding Kent State to -31. The halftime score was 65-0, and then the final was 71-0. Nico Iamaleav went 10 of 16 for 173 yards and a score before heading to the bench, and three different tailbacks ran for 99 or more yards in the win.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State had an early bye week and now prepares to welcome Marshall for Week 4 at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes have played two games, outscoring the opposition by a combined 108-6, have yet to permit a touchdown, and have rolled up 1,087 yards of total offense. In Week 6, the Buckeyes will see Iowa, who had a hard time against Troy. The last month of the regular season gets interesting with Penn State, Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana and Michigan all in a row. Right now, those five teams have a combined 9-2 record.

Miami (FL) Hurricanes

Miami (FL) demolished Ball State in Week 3, 62-0. They have won their first three games by a combined 159-26, thanks in large part to quarterback Cam Ward. Miami set a school record against Ball State with 750 yards of total offense. Ward accounted for 346 of those and set a career best with five touchdown passes in an FBS contest. He became the first Hurricanes quarterback to start a year with three consecutive 300-yard passing games. Next week, the Hurricanes head up to Tampa to take on South Florida, who hung with Alabama for three quarters before settling for the loss.

Ole Miss Rebels

Ole Miss controlled Week 3 against Wake Forest, rolling to a 40-6 win on the road. Jaxson Dart set the Ole Miss mark for passes without a pick – and then had an interception on his very next attempt. He still threw for two scores and 377 yards, and Henry Parrish Jr ran the ball 23 times for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The game didn’t get out of hand until late, though, as the Demon Deacons could have trimmed the deficit to 10 during the third quarter. However, Ole Miss marched down the field for a 96-yard touchdown drive and then added two more scores, out gaining Wake Forest, 650-311.

USC Trojans

Don’t look now, but USC actually has a defense under Lincoln Riley. The Trojans shut out Utah State last week in their L.A. Coliseum opener, and they have a Week 3 bye to help them get ready for Michigan. New quarterback Miller Moss has shown that he is ready for Big Ten play. The defense will get its stiffest test of 2024 at Michigan Stadium, but new coordinator D’Anton Lynn will benefit from the fact that the Wolverines haven’t moved on from the Jim Harbaugh era all that smoothly.

Missouri Tigers

Missouri almost became the latest victim of Bill O’Brien and the up-and-coming Boston College Eagles, who fell out of the top 25 despite losing at Missouri in a white-knuckler. Missouri was behind the Eagles, 14-3, after BC scored on a 67-yard broken-play touchdown. Then Mizzou quarterback Brady Cook started to feed Luther Burden III, who ended up with six catches for 117 yards. Cook had started 4 for 9 but then went 17 of 21 the rest of the way as the Tigers came back to win, 27-21.

Penn State Nittany Lions

Penn State had a Week 3 bye and faces Kent State in Week 4. Hopefully the Golden Flashes are getting a lot of money to visit Power 4 schools and take a pounding, because after that Tennessee debacle, the Golden Flashes could find it hard to get motivated to get off the buses in Happy Valley.

^

Oregon State Beavers

Oregon didn’t let up on Oregon State in the 2024 installment of the Civil War – the first time in over 60 years since the schools met as members of different conferences. The Ducks rolled to a 46-14 win after some inconsistency in surprisingly tough wins in Weeks 1 and 2. Oregon broke a two-game losing streak when playing up in Corvallis. Oregon picked up more than 500 yards of offense and scored touchdowns on six of their seven drives. The defense shut out the Beavers after halftime. It looks like the Ducks are ready for Big Ten play.

Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State ended Arizona’s nine-game winning streak, which had been the longest in the FBS. Avery Johnson threw for 156 yards and two scores, and broke the 100-yard mark in rushing for the first time in four career starts. It also helped that Dylan Edwards returned a punt for 71 yards, and the defense stopped a quality Arizona offense that had a five-game winning streak against teams ranked in the AP Top 25.
