Picking the outcome of football games straight up with a moneyline is a good way to build up your sports betting account when you are certain about an outcome but don’t want to deal with a point spread, and when you are on the right side of the wager, you can make significantly more money this way when an upset comes through. For the opening week of the 2018 NFL season, we have picked three NFL Week 1 games where we feel confident enough about the outcome for you to put the moneyline pick to your advantage. As always, home teams are in all caps.

Sunday, September 9

Jacksonville (-3) over N.Y. GIANTS (1:00pm ET, FOX)

Jacksonville was a surprise AFC contender last year after rolling all the way to the conference championship game — and leading the Patriots on the road going into the fourth quarter. They look to make the postseason for two consecutive years for the first time in 19 years — but openers have not been kind to them, as they have lost five of their last six. However, they start 2018 with one of the top defenses in the league, with at least one All-Pro competitor at each level. Blake Bortles showed some real growth in the postseason and has looked solid in the preseason this year. The Giants have also lost five of their last six season openers. Their O-line has three new starters, and they have two terrific wideouts in Sterling Shepard and Odell Beckham, Jr. Tailback Saquon Barkley is already a favorite for Rookie of the Year. However, their defense permitted more yards last year than any team but Tampa Bay, and they only made one major addition in Alec Ogletree. I see the Jaguars managing the New York offense and putting up plenty of points. NFL Week 1 Prediction: Jacksonville 24, New York 13

Tennessee (-1.5) over MIAMI (1:00pm ET, CBS)

The Titans impressed last season when they went to Kansas City and picked up a wild card playoff win that featured a furious comeback in the second half. This year, they welcome new defensive coordinator Dean Pees, who is supposed to shore up the issues that led to the Titans surrendering so many points. Marcus Mariota needs to deliver this season; so far, he has shown flashes of brilliance, but he is fast and has a terrific arm, so it’s time for him to show what he has. With Derrick Henry to carry the ball, he has plenty of balance. The Dolphins tumbled to just six wins a year ago after making the playoffs in 2016. Ryan Tannehill returns at ful strength at quarterback, and the wideout tandem of Danny Amendola and Albert Wilson looks to fill the hole that Jarvis Landry left when he went to Cleveland. The Dolphins may slide a bit this season defensively, and I’m not sure Tannehill has what it takes to beat the Tennessee defense. NFL Week 1 Prediction: Tennessee 24, Miami 20

L.A. Rams (PK) over OAKLAND (10:20pm ET, ESPN)

One of the more intriguing matchups in the Week 1 slate comes in the Monday Night Football nightcap, as the Raiders welcome Jon Gruden back to the coaching profession, and the resurgent Rams start the defense of their NFC West title. Oakland just became a lot less scary on defense when they traded away Khalil Mack to the Chicago Bears, and their strategy seems confusing at best as they brought in AJ McCarron as an apparent backup to Derek Carr. So while Gruden is exciting to have back on the sideline, it’s hard to argue that they’ve made their lineup any better. The Rams have Jared Goff, Todd Gurley II and a receiving tandem of Cooper Kupp and Brandin Cooks that should find plenty of room to move the ball against a relatively porous Oakland secondary, especially with Mack gone. On defense, the Rams had one of the stoutest units in the NFC last year and should be able to handle a Raiders team relying on Marshawn Lynch to carry the ball. NFL Week 1 Prediction: Los Angeles 30, Oakland 16
